History/Background: Josephine Van Ryan (or Josie for short) shares many characteristics of her fraternal twin sister Sondra (them being twins, they would obviously have a lot in common). She is very kind and generous towards others and is always ready to help those in need. Just don’t make her angry. You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.
The Van Ryan house was not a very pleasant place to live in. Patricia Van Ryan was alright. There weren’t a whole lot of rules in the house. She pretty much let the kids do whatever they wanted to, as long as they didn’t break any laws in the process. It was Timothy Van Ryan Senior that was the problem. Timothy Van Ryan Senior was not a very good father. His daily activities at home included beating his wife and kids, drinking a whole case of beer while watching sports on T.V. (if your idea of watching sports includes yelling at the screen ever five seconds), beating the wife and kids some more, sitting on the porch swing and smoking pot, sexually abusing the kids, sitting on the living room couch and drinking a whole bottle of rum…I think you get the idea.
Not long after Sondra had ‘left the family’, as her father had put it, Josephine’s siblings had started to get rather suspicious. Her cat Caesar hadn’t gone with her, and she hadn’t come back for him. Everyone in the house knew that Sondra had loved the cat too much to just leave him behind like that. It was generally agreed that if she had left Caesar behind, then she hadn’t left of her own free will. They all quickly decided to pack their things, say good-bye to their mother, take the cat and leave the house before anything could happen to them too. Josephine decided to stay, though. It was against her better judgment, but, she stayed anyway, because, as she had put it, ‘someone has to take care of mom’.
One cold and windy December morning, Josephine drove home from a party that was held at her best friend Christine’s house. From the moment Josephine entered the dark, silent house, she knew that something wasn’t quite right. It was the strange, eerie, foreboding silence you get before something really bad happens to you. And something really bad did happen to her. Walking down the hallway she saw that her mother’s door was open, and when she walked into the almost pitch dark room, she heard a sound coming from the bed. It was a sound that was made quite often in the Van Ryan house. It was the muffled sound of someone trying to speak with something covering their mouth.
Carefully making her way over to the bed, Josephine could just barely make out the nude figure of her mom, who was tied very firmly to the bed. Taking the gag off her mom’s mouth, Josephine was about to say something when her mother shouted at her, saying, “Get out now! It’s a--” Josephine didn’t get to hear the rest of the sentence, because at that point someone had hit her very hard on the back of her head with something very heavy and knocked her out cold. When Josephine had regained consciousness, she noticed two things. One was that she was bound and gagged on a plane, somewhere that she had not hitherto associated with being tied up, except possibly in a hostage situation.
The other thing she noticed was that in the plane with her were some very unpleasant-looking men in white jackets. This did not bode well with her. Being tied up and surrounded by any number of very unpleasant-looking men in white jackets was not a good sign, no matter which way you looked at it. Upon eaves dropping on a conversation between a few of the men, she heard the words ‘Shokushu Island is straight ahead’. Josephine’s grasp of foreign languages was shaky at best. She had picked up a few words here and there, and ‘Shokushu’ was one of them. Shokushu…Shokushu…well, some old man had once told me that ‘Shokushu’ was Japanese for ‘tentacle’…Josephine trembled with fear as the plane started to descend...
That was about two years ago, give or take, and now Josephine is settled in at Shokushu, living happily with her sister and lover Sondra and their roommate Kathleen.
