Ashley Emerson has always been somewhat “average”.

That’s not meant to imply that she’s unattractive, far from in fact. Ashley has a friendly, albeit somewhat crooked smile, a pair of deep, mischievous dimples, and warm dark blue-green eyes. However, her height or, more accurately since she’s barely 5’2”, lack thereof, glasses, build (while she’s athletic at 106 pounds she’s quite slight) and lack of an “upper deck” make it easy for Ashley to simply blend into the background. Perhaps the most memorable physical characteristic of Ashley’s is the way her nose wrinkles when she laughs, which is a fairly common occurrence.

Ashley has never been all that concerned with hairstyleage. More often than not Ashley simply wears her dirty blonde hair down, letting it part naturally in the middle and fall on either side of her oval shaped face. On the occasions when she finds such a style irritating, Ashley will throw her hair up into a bun, a pair of pigtails worthy of Pippy Longstocking or a ponytail. Ashley’s always tried to rationalize her disinterest in fancy hair styles by reminding herself of the various uniform policies she’s dealt with in grammar school, secondary school and now college. The truth of the matter is, Ashley’s a bit lazy and she’d rather spend an extra half hour with her head on the pillow then in front of the mirror with a curling iron.

For Ashley, clothes have always been something of an afterthought. A good deal of her ambivalence towards style comes from the fact that school has always and continues to require a uniform. As such, Ashley’s outfit choices either tend to mirror her school uniform; a skirt (though rarely plaid), a polo shirt and trainers or Mary Jane’s or fall as far from uniform as possible; sweatpants or Soffe shorts, tee shirts and flip-flops.

Background:

Ashley Emerson was a military “brat”, without the constant relocations often associated with such a childhood. When Ashley came into the world, nearly eight years after her sister Pauline, her father, “The Admiral” (RDML. Paul Michael Emerson) was a horsehair shy of forty-five and retirement from the US Navy and on his last deployment at the Naval Air Station, Fort Worth. Despite their advanced age, Ashley’s parents regarded her birth as a joyous occasion.

Childhood for Ashley was somewhat odd. The enormous age discrepancy between Ashley and her siblings left her with the best of both worlds. She was, essentially, an only child and after raising three other children her parents were used to the routine and were willing to give her a great deal more freedom then any of her siblings. For some reason Ashley took advantage of neither.

From preschool on, academics have always been the first priority for Ashley (she was a dynamo with building blocks). However, Ashley’s school first attitude didn’t prevent her from expanding her horizons with extracurricular activities; pee-wee and high school sports (tennis, softball, swimming, etc), photography, the school paper and the assortment of clubs. Nothing, however, captivated her like a mind-expanding homework assignment.

When the time came for Ashley to make a college choice it seemed like it was going to be easy; the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis or, on the off chance that didn’t work out, Southern Methodist University. At the Naval Academy she would have been a legacy and SMU offered a comprehensive pre-med program and an association with an excellent medical school. Before the foregone conclusion was reached, however, an unsolicited brochure came from a school, Shokushu, arrived and captured Ashley’s attention. The campus, while smaller then she’d have liked, seemed to offer everything Ashley wanted in a university and the fact that it was somewhat secluded (although she didn’t know just how secluded) only sweetened the deal. The last thing Ashley wanted was a school where her parents could pop in. While she had no plans to go totally wild, a little freedom can only be considered a good thing.

Psychological Profile

Personality:

Ashley is friendly, at least she considers herself to be, though she’s not particularly outgoing. If interaction is “forced” on her, like having to do group work or dealing with a roommate she’s cool with that and she can be funny and entertaining in such situations. At the same time, Ashley’s equally comfortable with a cheesy romance novel, her comforter and some privacy.

From time to time, Ashley’s been told that she’s intimidating and standoff-ish. Neither criticism is something that she really understands. Ashley will readily admit to being goal-oriented and something of a perfectionist but she doesn’t understand why anyone would be scared of her because of that. Ashley better understands the “standoff-ish” comment and assumes it has to do with the fact that she plays things close to the vest and doesn’t flash her emotions all over the place.

Growing up in a military household, Ashley got used to a regimented lifestyle and she’s continued that. She’s big into lists and schedules and whatnot and if someone accused her of having a stick up her butt Ashley would probably have to admit that it’s a fair criticism. Her life could definitely use a little more spontaneity. That realization is one of the reasons she picked Shokushu, since it was the only school she seriously considered that she hadn’t been planning to attend since she was in diapers.

Ashley loves jokes and puns and for the most part the cornier the better. That love definitely creates some awkward moments but Ashley doesn’t worry too much, since the jokes entertain her and that’s what matters.
