Background: Almost everything about Hiruka's life was average. Her grades, her looks, her family, everything except her strange silver hair, focus of equal parts ridicule and wonder for her peers. Living in a shrine within Tokyo, she studied ceremonial fan dances under her mother's kind guidance, quickly picking up the intricate ceremonies and loving every minute of them. Her life continued in this simple, happy manner, until high school, when a strange stray cat followed her home from school, slipping in her window in the dead of night.

It hopped up on her bed and sat on her chest, licking her nose to wake her, then proceeding to change her life forever. The cat was a magical creature, a guide and aid to create warriors to fight the forces of darkness and sorrow. This particular cat, Pyon-kun, had chosen Hiruka due to the gentle love it saw in her heart, for her family and for her friends. It gifted her with the power of the stars, and gave her the ability to change into a mighty warrior of love and beauty, Gypsy Star.

For over a year, the group fought various demons and aliens, and surprisingly, won. They saved Tokyo from innumerable foul plots, all while living normal high school lives. They fell into and out of love, discovered betrayal, forgiveness, and the warm glow of trust restored. They were the best of friends, closer than sisters, sharing their secret life, and a deep sense of purpose and destiny.

Sadly, as in all things, for every light, there is a shadow. And the shadow cast by so bright a light was dark indeed... The girls had succeeded in clearing out most of the demons and malicious aliens in and around Tokyo, but neglected to address the more human elements of darkness lurking in the city's heart. And finally, this oversight proved to be their downfall. A particularly unforgiving demon lord, whose name is lost to ignomy, stumbled upon an uncharacteristically bright idea. Every time he sent a monster, or demon possessed human to destroy the girls, their magical powers of love cleansed the darkness from the pawn, assuring their victory. Therefore, why not seek out a human, steeped in the darkness of his own heart, untainted by supernatural evil, a purely mortal monster of self creation.

The demon lord searched and searched, his minions scouring the human underworld for a truly ruthless and cruel specimen. And finally, they began to return, whispering a name, a title....X-S. No one knew his real name, only the moniker he had anointed himself with, through countless crimes of surpassing brutality and efficiency. The name came from the calling cards he left at every scene, a small black business card with the very same letters embossed almost arrogantly upon them, and the truly excessive lengths he went to in his chosen games.

The demon lord contacted X-S, and offered him whatever he wished, in exchange for the removal of the girls. The killer accepted and claimed his price then and there, murdering the demon lord and his minions in a horrific bloodbath, claiming the head of the great beast as a trophy for his home, the look of shock precisely what he wished to have in his new display piece. However, X-S was in fact, a man of his word, and even though his employer was dead, he intended to honor the deal.

The girls had no idea something different was coming for them of course, and went about their daily lives, fighting the odd demon, saving a couple on the brink of breakup here and there. One bright, idyllic day, the five took a trip into the city, Pyon-kun flouncing along with them, tail snaking above him as he walked along the rail of the bridge they were taking over a highway. Reiko, their leader, stopped in her tracks, turning to ask the others if they heard that weird buzzing a moment ago, just before her chest began to turn a deep crimson, blood pouring out of the hole she never even felt ventilate her. The girls panicked, rushing to change into their alter egos, and save their friend. Mid change, Hiruka felt something wet splash across her face, and was aghast to see her hand come away red as she wiped it, eyes darting to the bloody smear that had until seconds before been their guardian, their power...Pyon-kun.

With the death of the magical animal, the girls' powers faltered, leaving them midchange, unable to do anything to save either Reiko or Pyon. As they stood in mute shock, they heard the weird buzzing once more, Hiruka screaming as Chitose's head burst beside her. Aoi pointed at a bridge in the distance, a man sized figure pointing a rifle in their direction, her mouth moving soundlessly as she tried to summon the words to a spell, a charm, anything to stop him, the magic dribbling from her grasp like water. She turned to run and collapsed with a sigh, a bullet taking her in the back, piercing her lung.

Hiruka tugged Midoru to the floor, taking cover behind the wall of the bridge, hugging the crying girl to her chest, tears blurring her own vision. This wasn't supposed to happen...not like this. The sound of approaching sirens gave her a spurt of hope, her eyes flickering up as a shadow blocked the sun. Standing on the wall above them, was a man, wearing a perfectly ordinary white business suit, a mouth full of perfectly white teeth smiling almost kindly from a face so bland it was instantly forgettable. And in his hand....was a rifle, the scope clipped to the top glinting in the sunlight. His smile broadened as he lowered the barrel toward the two cowering girls, the sight shifting from one to the other as he played a silent game of eenie-meanie-minie-moe.

Hiruka pulled Midori behind herself, glaring up at the man, her eyes full of tears but defiant. The smile left his face like a shadow moving, his expression becoming pensive. After a moment, he nodded, and hopped down, grabbing her chin in one ice cold hand, meeting her gaze with his flat, black eyes.

You, my fierce little mouse, may live.

Her eyes widened, her body unable to move, her gaze locked to his like a frog hypnotized by a snake. She felt warmth flow down her back and cast her eyes to the side, seeing the man's arm extended under her arm, a wicked knife buried in Midori's throat, bubbles of blood foaming out around the blade as she gurgled out her last moment. Unable to take the sheer weight of horror bearing down on her, Hiruka lost consciousness, collapsing on the bridge, the last thing she sees, a black business card floating gently through to the air to land on her face, the letters "X-S" huge in her fading sight.

Over the next two years, X-S took a special interest in the girl. She came home from the hospital to find her room neatly rearranged, the pictures of all of her friends replaced with blood smeared crime scene photos of their mangled bodies. The following week, her parents didn't come home from work, their bodies found a few days later in a dumpster near the very same bridge her life had begun to degenerate on. She was forced to put on a brave face, comforting her younger brother, desperately trying to find a way to support them both.

The next week, her father's attorney called to tell her a guardian had been appointed, and would be waiting for her when she got home from school. She arrived and stopped dead as she saw the man that haunted her every nightmare, holding her younger brother in a playful hold, tussling with him on the floor. He looked up at her and smiled coldly, glancing at the boy and drawing a single finger across his throat before placing it to his lips with a wink and a shushing noise. She fell to her knees, not believing the depth of the horror X-S was visiting upon her.

For the next two years, X-S played the part of surrogate father and guardian to the two siblings, treating the boy, Hoshino, like a favored son, raising him with all the love and affection their real father had shown, yet always giving Hiruka subtle reminders that he could murder the boy at any moment, should she stop playing along with the game. Her life was more miserable, X-S delighting in humiliating and degrading her, forcing her to perform various sexual acts for him, yet never actually raping her. He forced her to get piercings, a favorite game being to twist them when she was asleep, or to attach weights to them, forcing her to go to school with them on. Near the end of her final year of high school, X-S disappeared, leaving no sign of his return, or notice as to why he had left.

Hiruka rejoiced, and took what money she had saved, convincing Hoshino to come with her on a "vacation" overseas. Unfortunately, while they waited for their flight, Hoshino left to use the bathroom...and didn't return. Hiruka desperately searched for him, and finally found him in a closed off terminal, talking to a man in a white suit. She ran to get him and stopped, mouth dropping open in despair. X-S was there, and as she turned to run, she saw him smile and nod to the man behind her. She felt a thump on the back of her neck, then everything went black.

The next thing she knew, she was being shaken awake on a plane, the back of her neck raw and sore, and a smiling woman looking down at her.

Welcome to Shokushu Ms. Kaihaku....please enjoy your enrollment in out university. Oh, and this was sent by your sponsor.

She numbly took the black business card, fingers trembling as they traced the raised X before turning it over, reading the words with dread.

For your sacrifice, your brother will live, to become my successor. Enjoy your stay my little mouse. Because you'll never be coming back.

Stumbling off the plane, blinking in the glare of the sun, Hiruka stared numbly at the tropical island, her silver hair floating in the wind as she began the next chapter in her tragedy...

Psychological Profile: Very subdued, quiet, and prone to fits of violent anger for no reason. Her crushing loss of both her surrogate and real family broke her faith in good, and the power of love. The following two years of terror and torment broke down her self confidence to nearly nothing. What little remains is the steel core of her beliefs, and the pure love she has for her brother. She is distant with new people, due to the deeply rooted fear of losing everything again.

Virgin? Yes, technically.

Piercing or Tattoos: Earring in each ear. Tongue and nipple piercings, given against her will, and forcibly maintained. Tattoo on the back of her neck of "X-S" in black ink.

Language: Japanese, English, ASL(one of the other girls in her group was deaf, so she learned it to make communicating easier).

Likes: Silence, peace, and cold, clear nights where she can see the stars. Festivals. Cards games. Alcohol, even though she's too young to drink. It helps her forget things...for a while at least.

Activities: Dancing, ceremonial or otherwise. Origami. Tea ceremony. Exercise and martial arts practice. Sitting in high places and staring at the stars, usually a flag or telephone pole, balanced on the top.

Miscellaneous: With the loss of her powers, and the shattering lesson that not even magic can stop a real monster, Hiruka spent the last two years of her life studying martial arts, specifically judo and aikido. She'd love nothing more than to get X-S into a death lock and kill the bastard for all he's done, but now she'll never get the chance. He found her interest amusing, and did nothing to stop her from learning while in his 'care'.

Magic? Formerly a magical girl, with powers related to starlight, extrasensory abilities, and precognition. With the death of her animal companion, her powers faded, leaving her with vague remnants of her former abilities. The only remaining special abilities she has left, are an extreme leaping ability, capable of putting her atop telephone poles and such, and perfect balance to go with it, allowing her to run between them on the wires if necessary. The other abilities she had relied on her sense of confidence, her love for others, and her faith in humanity to power them. As all of the above have been eroded if not shattered, she couldn't use any of her other old powers, even if the limiters weren't in place on the island.

((So, there you go. Long, and weird, I know. Does it fit with the theme, or is it too much?

Have you, by any chance, read a story called Sailor Nothing?

Because I can't help but think of it...

Very strange and interesting story.

Need a hug?

A lot of effort put forth in that history of yours. It kind of reminds me of Salior Moon. Good to know I'm not the only girl with white hair 'round these parts. Interesting biography, welcome to Campus.

Thanks both, and yes I have read Sailor Nothing. I kind of wanted to go the other way from it.

You did a great job of it...I'm just saying I think Kaihaku and Himei would have something to talk about. ^_^;

Like I said, Kaihaku's backstory is very stange and interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing you around campus.

Such a dark history. Every time I feel like I've got a handle on how Shokushu goes, somebody throws something unexpected my way.

Thanks Violett. And yes, I'd imagine they would. Well, up to the point where Hiruka became jealous and angry, since Himei got to live a normal life in the end.

As for an RP Linnis, sure, I'd love to. PM me and we can work out details.

As for it being dark, did I go too far niellwyn? I'm strongly influenced by Japanese horror, be it movies, literature or manga, so I'm a tad desensitized to what others consider dark. To be quite honest, I was holding myself back from going into any further detail, since I thought it would be too much. Maybe I'll post an extended version, in the form of a short story or the like, if anyone would like a more detailed look at the two years prior to her arrival on the island.

It's by no means bad. I'm impressed by how much you allowed yourself to detail. I love horrorific themes, but I was simply surprised to see them so ably used in a shokushu student's background story :)

Thank you. This is going to sound a bit silly, but when I was writing out her story on my notepad, I was thinking of Sailor Moon, Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series, The Tale of Genji, and Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. I ended up trying to mix them all up in a blender, and Hiruka's story is what came out of it. There were other influences, but those four are the major factors.

Hiruka's name is actually an alteration of Hikaru, as I saw her late teen years as a sort of reverse procedure to the one Genji enacts to raise his 'perfect wife'.
