Background: Elaine’s mother was a silent, bitter woman who raised her child by herself, and never referred to the father. As Elaine found out at the age of fourteen (neighbours do talk, and a skinny fourteen-year-old can hide in places you’d swear there weren’t room) she wasn’t sure who the father had been – there was a choice of seven thugs, not all of whom had been caught.
It explained a lot of things, actually. The cryptic comments her mother had sometimes made, the way she’d sometimes looked at Elaine as if she hated her, that odd resentment that had come out at times, the way she’d taught Elaine never to trust a man – or a woman.
It didn’t bother Elaine overly. She knew who she was, and who she wasn’t, and she had her music. That was all that mattered. Nevertheless, she knew her presence was an irritant to her mother, a living reminder, and when it came time, she started looking for boarding schools far away – with a good music programme. She couldn’t even place Shokushu on a map. It seemed perfect...
