Post Glimpse of Hope.
Shai gently stroked Pan’s fur. Today she had Pan imitate the appearance of a ‘Canis Lupus Arctos’ or more commonly known as an arctic wolf. She sighed and glanced down at the wolven Pan, no bigger than a house cat. She hadn’t considered how silly certain species may look when the nanobot could only reach a certain size due to certain limitations. Though, she had to admit, it was comparable to having a pup version of anything, animals are always much more cuter when they’re tiny.

Pan offered her some much needed solace since she’d been introduced back into campus. Thus far she had found no indication of her friends or the bastard that she’d last seen them with. To add insult to injury, Shai was almost starting to believe that perhaps she’d been imagining things. Since her return she hadn’t encountered a single monster, nor any student that had spoken of such ‘hallucinations’. It was almost as if nothing had ever happened, perhaps she was simply crazy? “Never, I’ll never forget you.”

Shai realized she had been staring absentmindedly at the wall in front of her. She blinked hard a few times and lightly pushed her fingers into her eyes. Now was not the time to think about the past, not especially when something so intriguing had popped up. It had just so happened that on her way to one of her classes that morning she had came into contact with a most interesting student. Normally she would have passed anyone by, not really being attracted to the same sex, she generally passed by most girls on campus without a second glace. But this student had become something of a muse to Shai.

Before the alleged ‘accident’ Shai had been working on nanite technology that was inhaled into the bloodstream. Her real intentions were to make some quick cash around campus to purchase some materials for her experiments since her father had apparently cut her off from his paychecks. After the nanites were inhaled they would travel through the bloodstream to predetermined locations that were identified (by Shai) to be exceptionally sensitive areas, susceptible to nerve manipulation. By emitting tiny pulses it increased the sensitivity to said areas. Shai grinned to herself. Shai was after all female and couldn’t help but feel somewhat restrained on an island full of other women, and masturbation could be somewhat boring for the average heterosexual, why not increase the sensitivity and everyone feels good? There was no equivalent that Shai could think of, and she knew it would explode around campus like most ‘body-altering-substances’ did, and she would make an easy profit.

Shai had been so blinded by the necessity of money that she hadn’t even considered the other options for her creation, that is until she met Kathryn. Kathryn was in a wheel chair, and immediately after seeing Kathryn Shai’s mind nearly exploded with the possibilities of her precious nanites. There was a great chance that Shai would be able to help her! Shai smiled again at the possibilities, running her slender finger’s through Pan’s ‘fur’.
In not so many words Shai had stepped out of her comfort zone and struck up a casual conversation with Kathryn, which to Shai’s surprise, ended up rather pleasant. Shai even went as far as inviting Kathryn to lunch.

Shai glanced at her tiny black watch, and decided it was about time to begin cooking if she wanted everything done by the time Kathryn arrived. If Shokushu was good for one thing, it was all of the healthy options they provided in the food catalogue. There were always an abundance of fresh produce and even hard to find food items, which struck Shai as rather unusual. She whipped up a miso soup, a freshly cut salad, and some grilled yuca tortillas, delicately placing them neatly and organized on the oak table that sat center in the room. She took a few extra minutes making sure that there would be enough room for Kathryn to maneuver around before plopping back down at her desk, not doing anything of much importance rather than to kill time.

To Kathryn, there was little more satisfying than a long, hot shower in the dark. She rested upon the small steel bench the school had so thoughtfully installed onto her dormroom shower’s wall, well shaped legs dangling beneath her. She could feel her firm bottom press down on the hard metal, even as she relished the hypnotic sensation of steaming water rippling down her hair and face, to splash over her shoulders and breasts, making warm rivulets over her taut belly. Her naked body shivered, and she tilted back her head, smiling up into the luxurious spray. In the darkness, there were no distractions from the simple reality of touch. She could be alone in her thoughts. A fruity, exotic scent brought a pleased sigh to her lips as she began to run a small bar of soap over her body. Lather bubbled along her smooth, flaring hips, and the froth was borne by the steaming flow into the crease of her peach shaped buttocks and onto her thighs.

As she bathed, Kathryn summoned the day’s events to her mind. She had met a girl earlier that day. Her name was Shai. Kathryn’s lips parted from mirth as the obvious pun occurred to her. Shai had been anything but, in Kathryn’s estimation. She remembered how the striking, white haired student had approached her and struck up a conversation. She remembered too, that she had been impressed with Shai’s intellectual bearing and her engaging manner of speaking. It had been some time since she had heard words whose meaning she did not understand, let alone delivered with such casual eloquence. Kathryn paused in her thoughts to lean away from the water, letting it rinse her lower body. Shai had been, besides easy to distinguish from her peers, remarkably pretty as well, Kathryn mused as she drew the soap along her slim arms and down to her pert breasts, absently kneading the ripe flesh. As always, a tingling warmth, altogether different from the heat of the shower, bloomed deep inside her. Usually, she liked to take her time, but she had already accepted an invitation from Shai to have lunch. So, she put away the soap with a wry expression and rinsed for a few more moment before shutting off the water. Once the cascade ceased, she grabbed a bar on the side of the tiled alcove, once again silently thanking the generous college staff, and hoisted herself off her seat and past the curtain to let herself sink, after some effort, into her wheelchair.

Kathryn performed the remainder of her bathroom ritual urgently, vigorously drying herself with a plush white towel and wheeling herself in front of the mirror to blow-dry her hair. She could barely contain her anxiousness as she debated whether or not to wear makeup. Normally it wasn’t her style to do anything special with her face but it seemed like she might make friends with Shai, and she wanted to make a good impression. Only a week had gone by but already she was missing her family and friends back home, and she desperately needed company. She frowned at herself in the mirror, then smiled, then performed an entire repertoire of expressions before slumping back. A bit of mascara couldn’t hurt, she decided, and opened the cabinet drawer. Minutes later Kathryn was tuning out the aimless elevator music as she rode up to Shai’s floor. She was wearing a flowing white skirt that gathered around her knees, ruffled at the hem. A black, form fitting turtleneck completed the ensemble much to Kathryn’s approval, as she greatly appreciated the contrast of classic hues. Better, the high neck brought attention to her face and highlighted the grey in her eyes, which was perfect for the dialogue Kathryn had in mind. The elevator chimed its arrival, and the young woman wheeled out through the parting doors and down the hallway. She stopped at Shai’s dorm, checking the number for surety. Hesitantly, she rapped her knuckles on the door.

Shai hadn’t been doing much of anything, just running some simulations with Pan- still under life simulation, staring up at her with begging eyes, tongue hanging playfully out of his mouth. She pat his head and asked. “Time Pan?”

“11:20.” Shai waved her hand over the thick ‘glass’ panel that served as her laptop, causing the illuminated images to fade into nothingness as the computer shut itself down. “She should be here soon.” Shai looked down at the disgustingly sluttish uniform she was forced to wear, always swearing that they designed it so the perverted teachers could molest the students with their eyes. Without another passing thought she decided to change.

Shai pulled open the drawer of the rather large oak dresser and peered inside. Not that she had to, she didn’t have very many varying options. Most of her clothes were identical and only in two colors- black or white. Today was rather special though, she couldn’t explain it but she felt inspired even by the thought of Kathryn, and wanted to make a lasting impression for their first lunch. Perhaps they’d even become friends. A smile crossed her lips as she considered what it would be like to have a friend again, but that smile faded respectfully in the memory of the two she’d lost. Shai’s eyes happened to fall upon one shirt that she’d forgotten she’d had and nodded, pulling it out of the drawer and holding it up. It still fit quite nicely and was accented with a royal purple in the waist area. She pulled off the blouse, her breasts bouncing playfully in their white lace prison as she tossed the article into the hamper. She looked kind of silly with the long, clinging shirt that hugged tightly around her waist, nearly engulfing the ridiculous uniform’s skirt. She slid the skirt down her long, curvy legs and kicked that article towards the hamper as well. She bent down opening another drawer, she usually didn’t mix and match her clothing either but again- today was special. She pulled out her black jeans and hurriedly pulled them on. She walked into the bathroom and peered into the mirror. Something was missing from the outfit and her hair was a bit ruffled. She took a comb and smoothed her hair, taking note that the nanites still had her skin in a refreshed, healthy looking state. She smirked wandering almost aimlessly to the closet, to her luck she found another piece of clothing that, again hadn’t been worn in so long she’d forgotten about its existence. A white cropped jacket with royal purple cuffs that ended mid way down her arm, the hem stopping just above her hips. She felt satisfied when she slid it on, but checked her image one last time in the mirror. Satiated she ran her fingers through her long, white locks and pulled their length over one shoulder.

She had just finished setting the table offering two places. Each place had a medium sized plate, and a small bowl, a fork, a spoon, and a pretty blue hued crystal cup. Shai always hated salad, so she always took great care to make it as appetizing as she possibly could – her favorite ended up being black bean salad. The spinach and lettuce leaves were mixed with mushrooms and tomatoes, which were set in a large silver bowl with scissor-tongs to aid in getting the stuff to your plate. In a smaller bowl Shai had mixed Black Beans, Corn, Lemon Juice, Parsley, Olives, Cilantro, and other various ingredients that you could use on your salad as a topping. She had lemonade and water in two pitchers, and decided right then she was going to have the lemonade. Then there was the soup, of course that she at the last moment decided to keep on the stove to preserve the warmth.
Shai was starting to get hungry with the sight and smells of the food and was grateful when she heard the knock. Shai strode over to the door, running her fingers through her hair one last time before turning the knob and opening it to Kathryn. Shai smiled, “Hey, I’m glad you came I was getting pretty hungry.” She teased truthfully, before pulling open the door wide so Kathryn could make her way in. After she was inside Shai let the door swing closed at its own casual pace and started towards the table, pausing to eye Kathryn’s attire. “You look lovely, glad to be out of the pathetic excuse they call a uniform?”

Kathryn’s parted laughingly over an impetuous smile. She nodded at Shai, red in the cheeks over her compliment, and examined herself briefly. “Yeah, I guess I do. When I was packing and all that, back home, I imagined all the different uniforms Shokushu might have but they were all fairly conservative. Not like the wispy blouses and miniskirts they actually make us wear at all. I don’t normally wear skirts, since I have to sit all the time.” Kathryn patted her lap meaningfully. “You wouldn’t believe the trouble I go through to make sure I can wear those uniforms decently.” Kathryn turned her wheels a few times, rolling over the carpet to let the door close unobstructed. “Thanks, by the way. It looks like we match.” Kathryn pointed at Shai’s own outfit, whose white and black was worn in reverse to her own. “An auspicious beginning no? We already dress the same!” Kathryn threw back her waves of freshly cleaned hair, and clasped her hands in her pristine lap. “Even when we don’t have to.” She added with a wink.

The wheelchair bound woman felt off balanced by Shai’s ready praise. In actuality, she had intended to compliment Shai right from the start, but being preempted by the other girl had made her hesitate, and now she couldn’t speak her admiration aloud without seeming merely polite. Consequently, Kathryn stalled for time, saying whatever seemed appropriate to fill the silence as she searched for something pithy to discuss. It was a shame she couldn’t sincerely compliment Shai too, Kathryn thought, because her hostess looked wonderful to her eyes. Shai’s guest couldn’t help but follow her with a dove colored gaze, quietly marveling at the way the light on Shai’s skin invited touch, and at her delightfully exotic hair. Her bosom was not as full as Kathryn’s, a fact that Kathryn took some private pride in, but was attractively pert and youthfully high. Her sloping hips bobbed as she walked, intimately defined by her snug jeans, which drew tight around buttocks designed to tantalize wandering eyes. Shai had a flair for fashion entirely unlike her own, more casual and down to earth. It was not necessary to get such a thorough look at her hostess, but Kathryn didn’t think Shai would notice since she seemed slightly busy at the moment, and didn’t particularly think she’d care. Surely she would assume Kathryn was busy admiring her clothes, which, to an extent, she was.

So captivated was Kathryn by the features of her possible friend that at first she took no notice of the room itself. In the moment of silence following their greeting, she swiveled in place, resisting a persistent desire to cross her bare legs, which felt a little cool in the dorm room. She saw the same antique brick and plaster walls as her own room, and the same blank ceiling and beige carpet. Shai’s personal belongings however, were much more numerous, and neatly cluttered the surfaces of her desk and dresser. Kathryn stopped her turning as she spotted Pan, blinking at his crimson fur, and generally surprised to find a pet in her room at all. Instinctively, she wanted to bring up that pets weren’t sanctioned in Shokushu, but figured that it really wasn’t her problem. If Shai could keep an animal without attracting attention, why ruin it for her? So she completed her circuit and rolled herself toward the table, beckoned by the savory fragrances of beans and the crisp scent of vegetables. It only took one look for Kathryn to realize that she was hungry, and that her mouth was painfully watering.

“I can’t believe you made salad!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands, her face shining with gratitude. “How did you get all this?” she asked, never pausing for an answer. “Mein gott, you must have spent so much time preparing everything. Are you majoring in Cuisine?” Kathryn openly sighed over the food, but never made a move toward it as she waited for her hostess to sit. Already she was planning out her meal, starting with as mushroom-heavy a portion as she could manage, followed by the cilantro and parsley. A slow blush started in Kathryn’s snowy cheeks, as she worried that she might be making a fool of herself. Determined to give a good impression, she leaned back and settled down, smoothing the ruffles of her skirt over her quivering knees, hoping that the table hid them, glancing at them sourly. I might not be able to walk, but my legs are perfectly content to let everybody know when I’m nervous, she thought sourly.

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
Shai seemed a bit nervous, much unlike their earlier encounter. Even with her friends long lost to her she had never actually had another student in her dorm before! She waited for Kathryn to situate herself, chuckling at the bombardment of questions she began pelting Shai’s way. She politely answered with honesty when she could find an opening in the excited girl’s questions. As she spoke, Shai was wandering around the dorm room strategically placing certain things, but more than once she noticed the glimmer in Kathryn’s almond-shaped eyes when she looked at the food. Shai scolded herself for being rude and immediately walked over to the stove, scooping up Kathryn’s bowl on the way.

“I suppose I should pour you some soup eh? I’m a pretty terrible host I’m realizing.” Shai chuckled lightheartedly, taking the ladle and pouring a generous amount in the bowl. Shai steadied herself and began the infamous ‘slow-soup-walk’ back to the table, setting it down in front of Kathryn. After Shai had got her own soup she took a seat across from her guest, and scooped some salad onto her plate laying on the tomatoes and mushrooms before handing the scissor-tongs over to Kathryn.

Pan, who was still under the life simulation saw that the food was in the readying stages of being eaten and his ears perked up. He gently left his post, which had changed from the bed to Shai’s chair in front of her computer, and padded over towards Kathryn. He gently nosed the wheel of her chair and yipped playfully, reaching his paws up almost readying himself to jump into Kathryn’s lap.

“Don’t be rude Pan, end life simulation and go back to the chair.” Shai said with an embarrassed smile. The pup, which had been so full of life only moments before seemed to dull down and mechanically obeyed Shai’s orders.

“Not necessarily a cuisine major, but as a Vegan you have to learn how to cook. I’m majoring in Nanotechnology, how about you?” She said motioning to Pan, whose unbreathing, unblinking form sat on the chair unmoving. Shai hadn’t planned for the conversation to go from light-hearted fun to having to show off Pan, and she certainly hoped that Kathryn didn’t think that of her. Her pearl teeth dug into her lower lip for a moment before she speared a couple of mushrooms and tomatoes and spinach leaves, taking a bite trying to maintain a semblance of casualty.

Shai’s soup gave off an unfamiliar cocktail of scents. Kathryn sniffed hesitantly. She could identify some of the herbs, but she had seldom eaten any soup that didn’t include meat of some sort. The small white cubes that bobbed in the dark broth Kathryn guessed to be tofu, but the sheer abundance of vegetarian ingredients defied her ability to name them. So, instead of questioning her hostess, Kathryn dipped her spoon into her bowl and brought it to her lips.

The soup was spectacular, Kathryn was relieved to discover. She tasted a few more spoonfuls, glad not to have to fake enjoyment. The flavor was complex and savory, and stronger than she would have expected. The overall effect was one of sweetness, tinged with salt and peppery undertones. The mushroom and tomato salad made a rewarding complement to the soup. Kathryn was about to congratulate Shai on her culinary skill when she felt fuzzy paws open her ankle, cold nails lightly scraping over her sheer white stocking.

“Hey there.” She cooed, leaning down and beaming at the happy red pup, until Shai gave the animal a flustered order, and her pet lost its vivacity and plodded over to the chair. Kathryn was beyond puzzled, and regarded her hostess with unfeigned bewilderment.

“How did you do that? Did you say what I thought you said?” Kathryn distinctly remembered Shai’s order. …end life simulation… But that made no sense at all. Simulation suggested that the pup wasn’t real at all, and that Kathryn memory refused to let her easily believe. Then again, she’d never seen such bright red fur on an animal before, and if Pan wasn’t a real animal after all, the mystery of how Shai was allowed to keep a pet became quite understandable. It took a few seconds for Kathryn to mentally work her way through Shai’s last comments, but when she did she settled down and peered at the white haired woman with curious grey eyes.

“Wait…you said you majored in nanotechnology?” Kathryn fidgeted, dropping her spoon into the soup bowl and crossing her arms under her chest. “I thought nanotechnology was all theory. Are you saying Shokushu actually has a program for that?” She glanced sidelong at the motionless Pan. Shai nodded.

“Of course. It’s an advanced major but…” Shai hesitantly trailed off, making the brunette draw her eyebrows together in perplexity. “I’ll just show you. You can think of Pan as a robot of sorts, made of nanomachines. Pan, resume life simulation.” In an instant the inanimate red puppy clambered onto its four feet and hopped clumsily to the carpet, scampering toward Kathryn energetically. Kathryn put her hand to her ripe lips to cover a helpless giggle, for the small creature reminded her of an American children’s book she’d once seen which featured a red dog named Clifford. Clifford, as Kathryn now thought of him, whined as he failed to climb Kathryn’s wheelchair, and licked at her ankle with a warm, wet tongue, tickling the girl into another fit of giggles. She reached down, taking pity on the poor fellow, and lifted Clifford up by his scruff, setting him into her lap.

“He’s not real? Are you sure?” she marveled aloud, giving Shai another questioning glance. Just then the rambunctious puppy scented Kathryn’s meal, and leapt unexpectedly onto the table. His adorable bulk bashed the soup bowl, sending it wobbling. Both women’s eyes widened, and Kathryn gave an apprehensive shriek that pushed her bosom into prominence as the precarious pottery tipped over the edge of the table. Dark soup splashed all over Kathryn’s spotless skirt. Kathryn shrieked again as the liquid seeped through the thin material and scalded her paralyzed lap, frantically wiping at the stain with her hands.

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
Shai had expected surprise and disbelief, she’d encountered it quite a bit during her stay at Shokushu. She usually kept her major in the dark, only hinting at what she was studying or avoiding the subject all together. This usually resulted in the lack of friends Shai was infamous for during her life, but still something about Kathryn put Shai at ease and she felt she could trust her completely. As she began to inquire more about Pan, everyone that Shai allowed to see Pan loved him immediately, Shai decided to issue the command to resume life simulation. The nanobot, responding immediately to the programmed behaviors of a young, tame pup bounded over to the gleeful student.

A small smile spread across Shai’s lips while she watched Kathryn joyfully play with Pan. She sipped at a spoonful of soup, grateful that it turned out as good as it did. Shai had begun to worry that perhaps she had begun to cook it a bit too late, which usually resulted in the tofu not absorbing most of the flavor without a good marinating. Thankfully, it wasn’t the case. A flash of red caught Shai’s eye and she saw immediately what was happening. “Pan, Down!” She kicked herself back from the table but was too late as the soup bowl tumbled over and most of its liquid components spilled down into Kathryn’s lap, a bit of the soup swirled across the table and fell onto Shai’s jeans as well. She cringed as she heard the student shriek in shock and pain, and cringed again when she felt the hot liquid seep through the fabric of her jeans. Throughout the ordeal Shai couldn’t help but cast a quick glance towards Kathryn’s chest, her breasts concealed but practically swelling through the fabric as her breath increased for a second shriek.

She hurriedly rushed over to Kathryn, grabbing a kitchen towel from the counter as she did. Without thinking Shai began to pat at the liquid in Kathryn’s lap, trying to soak up as much as she could so that the stain would be easier to remove. “My god are you okay?” Shai breathed. “I’m so sorry I didn’t- He’s programmed to simulate the behavior of the chosen species, my god I’m so sorry.” Shai stammered, her slender fingers patting at the liquid and brushing against Kathryn’s skin through the thin fabric. Kathryn’s responses were just as jumbled, trying to be sympathetic and assure Shai that it wasn’t her fault. Most of them fell on deaf ears, Shai felt miserable. How could she possibly propose anything to Kathryn after something like this?

“I have some shorts or perhaps a skirt that will fit you, we should wash this quick before the stain settles.” Shai offered after the initial shock was over. The intense heat of the soup had cooled and while the area on Kathryn’s legs was inflamed she wasn’t severely injured. “I know I’m wearing black but…” Shai glanced down at her own damp lap. “I really don’t want to go around smelling like soup for the rest of the day either.” She joked trying desperately to lighten the mood. She still felt terrible for what Pan had done, and immediately scanned the room looking for the culprit.

Still under life simulation Pan had his head low on his paws watching the two women as they dealt with the repercussions of his accident. “Pan can you clean up the mess you made while we change…and switch to a partial simulation please.” Partial simulation was used when Shai wanted Pan’s company, but also wanted to use his data and Artificial Intelligence, it allowed for him to use deductive reasoning based off of literally, millions of scenarios.
“I apologize for the mishap Ms. Kathryn.” The gentle, male voice emitted from the partially spread lips of Pan’s maw. He had sensed her discomfort before, but under partial simulation it allowed him to react in a more civilized manner as Shai explained after she watched Kathryn’s eyes widen at the voice. Immediately Pan darted off to the bathroom. He reappeared moments later bearing towels in his teeth and leapt on the table after calculating the effects after his landing. It went smoothly and he literally began to clean up the mess as well as the current form would allow him to.

Shai had been rummaging through the dresser. She didn’t have anything quite like Kathryn’s flowing skirt, but she could wash and dry it hopefully before their meeting together was over. She pulled out two pairs of black mesh shorts with the white imprinted SHS. “I’m sorry I couldn’t find anything quite like what you have but, I promise I’ll get that stain out.” Shai apologized as she approached Kathryn with the shorts.

Shai unbuttoned her jeans and ran the fabric down the length of her slender, curvy legs, gently stepping out of the impressions made. Her black lace panties were a perfect fit, hugging her firm bottom in all the right places in Shai’s preferred style that she called ‘booty-shorts’. She stepped into the shorts and hurriedly pulled them up, apparently apologizing for the mishap repeatedly since Kathryn mentioned that she was fine and for Shai to stop apologizing…seriously this time. Shai nodded at the reprimand and smiled, perhaps she hadn’t ruined the lunch quite yet.

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
The soup burned, and Kathryn wanted so much to kick and flail her legs, but all she could do was wiggle her hips in frustration, hissing. Luckily the heat faded in seconds, but she was afraid she may have actually gotten hurt by the accident. Shai came to the rescue with a dry cloth and sopped up the worst of the mess. Her efforts allowed Kathryn to calm herself, and gradually her heaving bosom stilled itself along with her breath. As her thoughts cleared, she realized that the soup, while hot, was probably not damaging, though she still wanted to check for herself. She also realized that Shai’s cleaning, while conscientious, was also firm and soft on her lap. The soiled skirt was barely more than a silk slip, and Kathryn felt the fluffy texture of the towel almost as if she had been nude, and she particularly felt the cloth insistently grinding and nudging in the deep crevasse between her thighs. Kathryn was a sensitive girl, and not above a little opportunism, so she offered no protest to halt Shai’s intimate ministrations. An illicit pleasure made her legs tremble anew, her face to warm, and an electric jolt deep in her belly. Her heart thudded in reaction to the risk that the situation might be exacerbated if Shai discovered the unintended result of her act.

Shai never seemed to catch on, however, being far more concerned with Kathryn’s comfort and with incessant apologies, which Kathryn bemusedly dismissed. Clifford spoke up in a even, masculine voice, shocking Kathryn out of her own private considerations.

“No…no problem.” She responded to Pan’s apology automatically, staring. Shai had not been exaggerating, it would seem. The animal was truly an artificial being. The more dubious facets of Kathryn’s inner self hastily offered a panoply of explanations. There could be a trick involved, or perhaps she was hallucinating. None of the options seemed likely, and the brunette suspended her disbelief in favor of an overwhelming curiosity. When Pan began to mop of his mess, Kathryn was utterly amazed. However, even her newfound perspective on the android pet failed to capture her attention when Shai unceremoniously doffed her jeans.

Shai was more beautiful than Kathryn had fully appreciated. Never mind how well Shai’s apparel suited her or how it flattered her abundant physical charms. As Shai’s form fitting jeans collapsed around her ankles, Kathryn was struck speechless at the sweeping contours of Shai’s legs. Her perfect skin was still present, shining in the light. Her calves tensed as she kicked the jeans away. Her thighs swished together innocently, bewitchingly, drawing Kathryn’s rapt gaze higher, to Shai’s most vulnerable of places, thinly veiled by her dark panties. All too soon Shai pulled a pair of shorts up to her waist, and extended another pair to Kathryn. Kathryn’s tried to speak, but her mouth was too dry to form words, so she smiled instead and swallowed to wet her tongue.

“Thanks.” Kathryn managed, conscious of a damning humidity in her own lap which could not be blamed on the soup. Abruptly the woman remembered the accident, and looked with chagrin at her skirt. It had been an absolutely new skirt, never before worn, and now it was probably ruined. If it was to be saved, it would require laundering as soon as feasible. There was not even time to roll herself somewhere private, she would have to change immediately. She took the shorts and draped them over the back of her chair, and began the laborious process of turning herself to the side so she could reach behind to unfasten her the dirty clothing. She bit her lip, her hip scraping the seat, her derrière straining against the silk. The soup stain smeared, and Kathryn groaned.

“Scheisse! Damn it all. I can’t…ugh…get it off quickly enough.” Her grey eyes went to Shai’s own, and hurriedly looked away as an idea formed in her head. It wouldn’t be so bad, she told herself. Shai wasn’t shy. Not having time to laugh at her pun, she looked back.
“Shai…could….could you help me out here? I don’t want this skirt ruined.”

Shai did not want to be rude, so shortly after handing the mesh shorts over to Kathryn Shai made her way over towards the table where Pan was still attempting to clean up. Her ears perked upon hearing the awkward struggle as Kathryn tried to hurry out of the skirt. Shai had guessed that the skirt was rather valuable and it didn’t look like it was worn very often, if at all. Another pang of guilt surged through Shai, and she cast a glaring stare at Pan.

Shai turned upon hearing Kathryn call out to her. “Of course.” She said. Pan had managed to clean up most of the mess, and she could always do the last wipe down of the table after the skirt was taken care of. Shai approached Kathryn and gently laid her hand on the student’s shoulder as she leaned towards the side. Her slender fingers worked at the fastening on the waist of the skirt and gently pulled the zipper down. Shai methodically worked, assisting Kathryn in shifting appropriately and soon Shai had the girl’s skirt down past her firm buttocks. Shai felt Kathryn tense, and felt the color rising in her cheeks, her eyes barely catching a glimpse at the girl’s panties before politely averting her gaze. As she continued to pull the skirt down, it revealed beautiful, cream-colored and quite shapely legs.

After a few moments, she had the skirt and slip off of Kathryn and immediately into the sink where she had begun to draw hot water. After a few stalled moments of looking back towards Kathryn, who seemed like she was getting the shorts on perfectly fine, she turned back to the stain that was threatening to ruin the beautiful skirt. Shai was used to this ritual, she usually hand washed most of her clothes too afraid to send them to the laundry where things seemed to ‘disappear’. Her fingers worked frantically, occasionally adding more detergent onto it when the scrubbing became particularly tough.

“Is it coming out?” She heard Kathryn chime as she readjusted herself in her chair.
Shai turned her head and announced happily that the skirt would be saved. She heard a relieved sigh from her guest, and she let a sigh of her own pass her lips. After a few moments more, and close inspection of the compromised area on the skirt under the brighter fluorescent light of the kitchen, Shai finally gently wrung the garment out and draped it on the towel bar in her bathroom to dry.

When she returned to the room she found Kathryn back at the table, in which Pan had done a good job of repairing and Shai came back to take her own seat. “Again, I’m really sorry about that.” Shai said, patting Pan on the head. “The full life simulation doesn’t really allow room for deductive reasoning.”

Shai gently set Pan on the floor and he gently padded towards the bed where he gently curled up, his ears alert and his eyes scanning the room constantly. “Where were we?” Shai said scooting her chair up closer to the table.

Kathryn began to reiterate on how she believed Nanotechnology to be a theory and not a functional form of science, causing a few sly smiles from Shai as she spoke.

“Well, in all honesty Nanotechnology was a distant theory about ten years ago but some brilliant scientists Murdeth, Buiyurick, and Hallaway, to name a few, set their differences aside and pooled together their information regarding the subject- they also happen to be funded by Shokushu allowing their theories to be taught to few individuals. While together, they’ve created very few functional working nanobots, they haven’t been able to make anything quite like Pan. I took an interest in about four years ago and took their theories and constructed my own, creating my own functional nanobots. Pan was the result of those nanobots. It was my intention to make a type of phone that would be able to reconstruct itself into a functional laptop, varying in size and shape so that it would make my work more portable. Instead, I found my ideas took a route of their own. So after sending in my schematics for a more primitive sketch of Pan, my references, grades I was accepted into the program.”

Shai watched at Kathryn digested her rather rushed explanation. She decided she would go into more information at Kathryn’s request. Shai blushed slightly, realizing she made it sound like she was smarter than some of the greatest minds in the world. “Well, I kind of am.” She thought pridefully to herself.

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
No matter how much Kathryn wanted to save her skirt, she accepted Shai’s help with trepidation. She was inviting all sorts of trouble by doing this. Shai could misinterpret Kathryn’s questionable pose as veiled flirting. Kathryn wasn’t being flirtatious at all, though the thought had occurred to her a few times, much to her chagrin. There was also the possibility that Shai might be a little too helpful, grab too much cloth, and actually uncover her ass completely. And what if she saw the spot of dampness on her panties for what it was, rather than faulting the spilled soup? The idea that Shai might suspect what Kathryn had been thinking about made her entire body stiffen with fear. She watched her new friend with doe like eyes as Shai unclasped her skirt and began to slide the silk over her legs. Her face was on fire, and her heart stopped beating. Kathryn swallowed a pained whimper and rocked her hips nervously. But Shai kept her eyes politely averted, and the moment of tension passed.

Shai headed for the kitchen and left Kathryn to contend with the black, stretching shorts. Kathryn felt drained in the aftermath of her worries, and observed Shai scrubbing her dirty skirt listlessly. All the life had evaporated from her blood, and Kathryn’s brain felt disconnected. She thought she might throw up, or faint. Then she realized that the air she had been holding in her lungs had begun to run out, and she took a deep gasp, after which she no longer felt so lightheaded. I’ve got to calm down, Kathryn berated herself, shaking her head. Shai was still engaged at the sink, and Kathryn’s stomach was still queasy, so she took a few ravenous bites of the tomato and mushroom salad to quell the turmoil in her belly, leaving her naked legs dangling. When she decided she would be fine, Kathryn draped the shorts over her shoes and tugged them up to her knees, distractedly asking how her skirt was coming along.

“It’ll be saved.” Shai responded brightly. Kathryn sighed and smiled and pulled the shorts a little higher. It was slow working herself into them, but there was no time constraint as there had been with the skirt, and she was used to the routine. Soon she had the tight mesh cupping her hips and buttocks, outlining her features almost as closely as a pair of nylons. They left absolutely nothing to the imagination, Kathryn noticed as she peered between her legs. Shai was just putting away the wet skirt and returning. The shorts were as suggestive on Shai as they were on herself, and Kathryn looked down at her food. The white haired woman sank down into her chair and smiled, asking to resume their discussion.

“Well um….” She faltered at first. “…I thought nanotechnology didn’t have any practical applications yet, except maybe carbon nanotubes, but all the news I read said that actual nanomachines were at least a decade into the future.” Shai blithely launched into an explanation, dropping names, nearly bragging. It all sounded believable, but Kathryn knew the concept of amphigory, and she held some reservations. As a rule, she didn’t believe people who claimed to be geniuses or exceptional in any way without proof, but she had to admit that Pan’s mere existence was convincing. Pan’s apparent artificial intelligence was especially impressive to Kathryn, and hard to fathom. Hence, she was ready, for now, to take Shai’s words at face value.

“So then Shai, can you tell me what you can do with nanomachines then? I only read a little bit about it, and the theories were all too long for me.” Kathryn asked, giving a curious glance toward the artificial red puppy sitting complacently to the side.

Shai was almost giddy with joy when Kathryn seemed genuinely interested in her applications to nanotechnology. For the first time in the meeting Shai’s eyes that had been nothing more than a dull lifeless gray, seemed to spark to life, glittering, the hue changing to a steel blue as she began to go into certain details. Most people would have found the discussion boring, but Shai was going to do her best to keep it entertaining.

“Pan was my first. My dad is the self proclaimed unearthly god of science.” Shai rolled her eyes and gave a slight smile. “He kept butting into my business trying to see what I was working on, but his work in the mechanical engineering field helped me greatly. After I came up with a design for my first nanobot- the microscopic kind of course.” She said brushing a stray lock of hair out of her face. “I enlisted my father’s help to build a machine that could mass produce the nanobots. In fact,” She paused, getting up from the table and over to her desk. She rummaged around for what seemed an eternity and pulled out several gridstyle papers that were rolled into medium-sized tubes. She glanced at the sloppy writing on the outside of the tubes and shoved them under her arm, also grabbing a small, but extremely heavy mechanical device. When she got back to the table she set down the tubes, her right arm straining under the weight of the machine, she gently lifted the salad bowl away and set the machine down with a heavy thunk. “This is what he built for me. Unfortunately, I need specific metals to produce nanobots- I can really use anything but it has to be strong and durable. So purified steel, barium and platinum are amazing if I can my hands on them. Lucky for me though, the nanobots are so small that a square foot of metal can produce trillions.” She said happily. Shai unraveled the tubes and showed Kathryn a sketch of her first true nanobot. It looked a hideous thing, almost prehistoric with several clawed appendages and a insect-like body, but there was a splash of red on the sketch indicating where the battery life came in, which brought Shai to her next point. “Pan is battery powered, he charges himself whenever he reaches around 60% or so, but other nanites I’ve created have a set battery that isn’t rechargeable, and depending on the function they can last up to an hour, or for weeks.”

Shai paused allowing Kathryn to take a look at the sketch before pulling a tiny, steel pin out of her watch and dropping it inside of the machine. It had an eyepiece so that Kathryn could watch as the nanobot was being created. Shai motioned for Kathryn to go ahead and take a look. The machine looked pretty simplistic. It had a shielded opening where the metals could be shaved and dropped, another shielded opening where batteries were created from the metals. Shai flipped a switch on the side and a tiny light was visible from the small squared box enabling Kathryn to see. Then Shai flipped another switch and the process begun.

A soft hum echoed through the room, and an even softer grinding could be heard as the pin was shredded and heated to make the metal more pliable. As Kathryn peered inside of the eye piece she could see tiny metallic arms working furiously as it bended and shaped the steel, molding the piece into almost an exact replica of the sketch she had seen earlier, with obvious improvements. Out of the nowhere a small sphere rolled into her view, and the arms snatched up the battery and placed it in the ‘head’ of the nanobot. A small spark and the battery was welded into place. The surface that the nanobot was held on shifted and the production of a second nanobot began. The process continued to repeat itself and Shai shifted the eye piece to the next portion of the production. Kathryn could now see that the nanobot had been turn onto its ‘belly’ and it was being punctured with an arm that had a green squarish object that disappeared into the bot’s back.

“What’s that?” Kathryn asked. Shai smirked and said. “Those are the nanochips, preprogrammed to give the nanobots instructions. That particular chip was made for a kind of make up that I’m creating. I don’t use a concealer or cover-up, not since I found out they use placentas.” Shai’s face twisted in disgust. “In the next stage the nanobots are given a panel.” Shai motioned Kathryn away from the eyepiece so that Shai could adjust it to the next stage, when she was finished Kathryn peered inside again to see a panel being attached to the back of the nanobot. “You choose a tone and the panels reflect that color for up to a week. They bond to living epidermis, I had a problem with them bonding to dead skin cells- there was a lot of skin toned colored dust everywhere. So they bond with the skin and reflect that chosen color, kind of like a mask of nanobots.”

The humming noised ceased as the nanobot production came to a hault, and the machine shut itself down, dispelling several spheres onto the table that contained the bots. Shai waited quietly to hear Kathryn’s thoughts on the matter.

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
Shai clearly loved her work. Kathryn was rendered speechless by the woman’s newfound animation. Shai brought blueprints to the table, a small apparatus, and even a few sketches, laying them out with obvious pride. Kathryn smiled at her liveliness, and tried to pay attention to everything Shai explained, but there was no chance to assimilate all the information at once, so she politely nodded whenever she didn’t understand and watched Shai busily demonstrate her discoveries. She was such a captivating girl when she wasn’t so reserved. Kathryn had to admit as well that it was growing more difficult to doubt Shai’s expertise by the second. Distractedly, she leaned over Shai’s shoulder to look into the machine’s viewport.

Magnified, she watched tiny machines assemble other tiny machines, installing computer chips, sensors, wires, and articulated limbs. The process was so intricate and unbelievable that she found herself fascinated by the sheer inhuman dexterity of movement, marveling at how the microscopic components were woven together.

“Wait wait wait.” Kathryn finally sat back, overwhelmed. “All this is too fast.” She put a hand to her forehead so she could think, closing her eyes. “Now, you say that you’ve got these nanomachines and you’ve got a factory for creating them which this….object is supposed to be, right?” Kathryn’s eyes sought assurance from Shai, and she nodded in assent. Taking a breath, Kathryn continued, touching the vibrating surface of the misshapen nanite factory. “And right now it’s making nanomachines for cosmets?” She frowned, searching Shai’s face for any sign of the tiny, insectoid robots on her skin, but there was nothing but a healthy sheen. Imagining that her face was harboring a colony of the twitching, inhuman things, Kathryn squirmed. Reminding herself that her own skin was probably a haven for countless biological organisms no less strange or alien, Kathryn self consciously stroked her own cheek. “Hmmmm….cosmetics. Why cosmetics? I can see how nanomachines could be used that way, but why not use them for….I don’t know, advanced materials or to fight disease? I mean, couldn’t they be programmed and designed to fight foreign bacteria the same way that our immune system does?”

As Kathryn proffered her suggestions, more potential uses for the machines occurred to her. In a moment she was intrigued, and in another she was truly excited. If she was understanding the concept correctly, nanomachines could be used for virtually any purpose, including the creation of new substances, refinement of molecules, surgery, variable textures and colors, and medicine. The possibilities flooded through her in a rush, and Kathryn looked to Shai with suddenly expanded perspective. “Oh wow.” She said. “They really could do what I said couldn’t they? Right?”

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
Shai’s smile faded to a shadow of what it had formerly been when Kathryn brought up the possibility that the nanobots could be used to cure diseases. It was probable, and plausible, but there was so much more to it than just creating a machine and sending it in.
“Well, the body is a magnificent machine itself, if anything foreign entered the body, the antibodies will work together to destroy it. Kind of like how when you get an organ transplant you have to keep taking medication so that the body doesn’t reject it. It’s a bit different with Skin. Skin can shed yes, but the nanites attached themselves to living epidermis, so as the skin dies the nanites readjust.” Shai shifted in her seat, crossing one of her slender, curvy legs over the other and bouncing the foot around nervously.

Shai enjoyed that Kathryn was asking questions, not only that but she knew the look when a mind was whirling with a million possibilities and thoughts. This was where she wanted Kathryn to be, and she was excited that she’d finally gotten there.

“So yes, they could be programmed for particular uses and that’s…well I have created nanites designed for nervous stimulation and I found that I can make the effects last up to an hour before the body starts to attack the nanites. In order to get around that little factor I’d have to simulate blood type and would most likely have to configure the nanite to become a ‘part’ of a person, which can be a very trying process. When I initially started with nanites I was experimenting with them, trying to find immediate and achievable uses so I could get the appropriate funding to move on to greater things. Inevitably I ended up getting a patent for a ridiculous toy that was released in Japan, so I came here to learn what I could and now I have the money to research and create whatever I’m capable of.” Shai shifted her weight again and rested her arms on the table.

“When I saw you today, I had the same revelation. You made me realize the true potential of what these nanites could do. I hadn’t even considered using them for the medical field, but I’ve always wanted to help people.” Shai paused, trying to gauge any reaction from Kathryn. She didn’t want her to think that the only reason she asked her over was to become Shai’s lab rat. That was the last thing she wanted, and after the time she’d spent with the young woman, Shai finally felt like she’d made a friend. She had almost considered not even mentioning it to Kathryn and letting it go, but that part of her wouldn’t allow her to.

“I think…I think I might be able to help you.” Shai steadied her steel blue eyes and met Kathryn’s gaze. She waited. Waited for anything. Anger, hate, resentment, elation, happiness, joy, hope. Anything.

“Help me with what?” Kathryn murmured. Her thoughts still ran through the possibilities of nanites with the aimless enthusiasm of an excited child, so Shai’s confession hit her from out of the blue, and she had no idea what to make of it. She took a look at the way Shai was gingerly biting her lip, and the way she was holding her breath. “What’s she so nervous about?” Kathryn wondered. Raising a thin eyebrow, she glanced down into her still lap, and made the connection in an intuitive leap.

“Oh! You mean my legs?” Kathryn laughed quietly, shaking the hair out of her eyes. “Sorry, I had no idea what you were talking about for a second.” Kathryn touched Shai’s fingers reassuringly, smirking from mirth. And then the enormity of what Shai had just suggested penetrated her habitual politeness, and her hand snapped closed around Shai’s fingers. Kathryn paid no attention, fixating her steely eyes upon the woman across from her. “You…mean my legs?” she repeated, searching Shai’s reactions solemnly. “That’s possible? The doctors said the damage was irreversible. Nervous tissue doesn’t repair itself like muscles do.” If it weren’t for Pan’s presence, Kathryn would have written the possibility off as crude boasting on Shai’s part, or an ill executed ploy to gain her friendship. But she had just seen a nanite constructed before her eyes, and witnessed a seemingly living puppy speak in computerized tones. Her capacity to believe was thus, unusually high.
Kathryn’s vision wavered, and she realized that she was about to cry. Abruptly she released her tight hold on Shai’s hand and sunk back into her chair, furiously wiping at her eyes. Fresh tears brimmed up to replace them, to her intense chagrin. The beginnings of a sob squeezed her heart like a hard knot of vapor, making her chest shudder. She had thought she had resigned herself to living her life without the use of her legs, finally, after so many hopeless months. She was in a new college, making new friends. Things seemed okay again, at long last. And now that her hopes had been raised for a single, bright second all the self pity and the injustice of her situation returned like a sledgehammer to her midsection. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t move, except to dig her fingernails into the table with so much force that it hurt her knuckles. Another sob erupted from her throat, loud and shaking, and she pinched her eyelids shut in shame.

“Gott….g-gott…” Kathryn was painfully conscious of the woman sitting across from her, who was surely alarmed at her reaction. Kathryn wanted to wave a hand at her to stave off any help, but she only curled her nails deeper into the wood, feeling the grain splinter. Inarticulate protests bubbled out of her as she desperately attempted to keep Shai calm, to give herself some time to bring herself under control. Gritting her teeth, she took deep, ragged breathes, and concentrated on the good memories since the accident. Get well cards. Her acceptance letter to Shokushu, and her father’s pride. Intimate midnight conversations with her mother. She thought of her favorite books. She brought to mind her beautiful new friend, Shai. With a last drawn out gasp, she opened her eyes and loosened her iron grip on the table’s edge.

“Sorry Shai. I’m so sorry. Don’t worry. I was….reminded….of the accident.” Kathryn forced her cheeriest smile, sniffing. “It’s okay. It’s okay. I’m alright now. You can help me, huh? That’s great. Yeah. That’s great Shai. Thanks. Tell me how. I want to hear how it all works.”

Post Re: Glimpse of Hope.
Shai’s lower lip threatened to tremble, the student immediately responded by digging her pearl teeth into it. She also did the best she could to watch as a myriad of emotion began to overwhelm her new friend. Almost immediately after implicating that she may know of a way to help the paralyzed woman who had become a friend over the past few hours, Shai was overcome with a feeling of guilt at her initial response.

A façade of ignorance? Had she overcame her injury and finally accepted fate, making the most of her life and finally reaching a state of happiness? And if so, had Shai just shattered that happiness with one sentence? The student couldn’t bare it, as she watched Kathryn’s expression turn from curiosity and excitement as the cogs inside of her brain whirled with wonderment as the uses of Shai’s technology, to watching as those beautiful almond-shaped, grey eyes began to fill with tears. Shai’s own steel grey, gaze matched Kathryn’s, also beginning to water. It took every ounce of will power to detain the tears, but Shai clenched her teeth and struggled through it.

Shai wanted to say something, anything but no words could form while she watched Kathryn begin to reflect on her memories. Shai hadn’t asked about the accident, but had gathered from the woman’s humbled demeanor that the injury was in fact an injury and not a birth defect. Not to mention the shapely legs that could have only been forged by activeness.

Shai wanted nothing more than to rush over and embrace the student when she saw the rapid rise and fall of her chest. She stopped herself, feeling it improper. The nigh-albino had made her way over beside the sobbing student, and Shai laid a gentle hand on her shoulder. Her expression one of genuine sympathy, since Shai couldn’t possibly begin to understand. Kathryn struggled to say something, and Shai could only coo “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…” But only minutes after it seemed the initial shock of Shai’s proposal had passed and the student began to visibly calm.

Then came the affirmation that Shai had guessed. There had been an accident, and as Shai continued to apologize, Kathryn insisted that she was doing much better and through blurry eyes asked how Shai had planned on accomplishing this procedure that would be nothing short of a miracle. Shai inhaled deeply, reluctantly returning to her seat at Kathryn’s request and began to put her thoughts together.

“As far as I can determine from your current…state.” Shai said taking care to choose her words carefully. “The results from the injury are because you’ve suffered severe damage to your spine, but Pan actually shed some new light on the situation by his mishap that I hadn’t even considered. You can still feel, which means your nerves aren’t damaged to the point of disrepair.” She paused for a moment and beckoned to Pan. Pan, had been watching the two intently taking the courtesy to blink and simulate breathing so as not to cause an eerie discomfort, his ears perked and he jumped off of the bed and bound over to the white haired woman. He hopped instinctively into her lap and awaited a command. “As you can see, Pan’s components can shift into whatever shape desired- Pan please depict a human spine for me.” Shai bit her lower lip, hoping Kathryn was following were she was going with her theory as Pan’s form began to tremble and manipulate itself into the desired form. After the transformation was complete, Shai placed the crimson steel spine on the table for Kathryn to examine.

“If there are pieces of your spine that are severed, perhaps I could program the nanites to replace the missing or broken pieces, and then create more to simulate nerve endings that would allow movement.

“There are a few factors to consider though. In the event a person receives an organ from a donor, they have to stay on strict medication so that the body does no reject the organ. My knowledge now indicates that my current nanites that are ingested have an average life in the body of two hours before the antibodies dispel them. However, I never saw a need to make them more acceptable to the body for my prior projects since the projects that required ingestion weren’t in a state of permanence. However, I think by altering the nanites to accommodate to your specific blood and chemical make up, I believe I could program them to take permanently to your body.”

She paused afterwards, allowing the steel gazed student, to digest the information.
