Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Shai breathed a heavy sigh as she peered outside her dorm window. She glanced over her shoulder at the sleeping Kathryn and felt a pang of guilt sting her harshly. She had been working so hard to find the solution to solve a certain bug that had hindered Shai’s research. She wanted to help Kathryn, to get her walking again, but she couldn’t figure out how to keep Kathryn’s body from dispelling the nanites once they were implanted in her body. She rested her head against the pane of the glass and decided that a walk to clear her mind would be really helpful.
She was stressed to be sure, but the student found her legs carrying her to wherever they desired .Her uniform’s skirt swishing from side to side, her long white locks brushing against her bare calves as she walked. It was a crisp afternoon, no need for a jacket. The island never really got intolerably cold, and when the snow fell it usually melted within a day or two, never really sticking.
Her path had carried her all the way around the dorms, out towards the track and back towards the classrooms. Then the idea struck her mind abruptly, she wanted to visit the gardens. Every year the freshman would plant a new garden as part of their initiation to Shokushu. She knew that there wouldn’t be any growth, the fading remnants of last year’s spoils, but she had went there once to clear her mind. It seemed fitting that she go there again.
To be honest, the student had been hoping that despite the season that perhaps the garden would be in full bloom upon her arrival. It wasn’t the case, but the student didn’t feel disappointed. The hedges that surrounded the wide arched, circular structure were still green, only fading to a light orange at the tips of their outstretched branches. The ground was firm, the bulbs of the garden having been planted weeks ago, but there in the center was the lone gazebo. Her place of solace, a place where she felt safe.
The student’s slender, curvy legs carried her up the four steps that led inside. It was spacious, and painted picket white with long dead ivy curling in and out of the fence-styled walls, coiling around the six pillars. The seating was in an arc around the cylindrical structure and here is where the student took her seat. The campus was only vaguely out of view, the garden set in a clearing surrounded by tall willows. She loved it here, but still a hint of sadness crossed over the student’s docile features.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
One would be filled with the need of excitement and a sense of exploration when you found yourself in a new place. Or maybe it was just Tani who always felt that way, especially on such a pellucid day. On her first day of actually moving about the campus, the young red head finds herself pulled in different directions, mostly due to curiosity.
She was very happy and optimistic of what classes she would partake in tomorrow, but for now she just wondered where a good place was to settle down and take everything in. She had been present in Shokushu for a half a day so far. The uniforms she received were two sizes too big for her, which she finds rather odd considering her height. But she dared not to complain when she took notice of others skirt heights. Satisfied with everything packed in her dorm room, she was trying to figure out where eveything was.
She knew little of the school itself as she walked through classroom now. They were large rooms and surprisngly large hallways as well. But when she understood where her classes were, the whole trip was very interminable for her sake.
And then somehow after walking a distance outside, she takes quick notice of a garden house. How long had it been since she had been in one? Years perhaps, she figures at least. Thinking the place was well adapt for a quiet place, she casually comes in with a bright expression. Despite her long uniform, her legs showed themselves a tannish color through the tinted windows. Though the flowers didn't seem as lively as one may think they would be, it offered a pleasent smell to her senses. She peers down to look at any plants that were slowly coming back from the dead of a cold night.
It was when she looked up did she find a curious sight before her-- another student. Her own expression usually carried one of friendliness and carefree... now it had changed to concern. The girl didn't appear very happy. She clears her throat as if silently asking permission if it were alright for her to be in here. Maybe the girl was venting and she was interrupting. Her white, blonde hair shined brilliantly with rays hitting it and the girl herself had such a smooth complection. It was sad to see her look so filled with sorrow. Perhaps she could cheer her up if givn the chance.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
The student had been lost in her own quiet contemplations. It was only a matter of time before she became overwhelmed, she reasoned. Her mind wandered throughout her consciousness. What were her intentions anyway? What had caused this moment of lament?
There was Plague, that wretched incubus who had been the sole cause for her injuries that kept her in a comatose state. Wasting years of her life in a hospital room. The last images she could recall were gruesome, and that wasn’t a part of her mind that she wanted to revisit.
There were Fenris and Adena. The two friends she had been locked away with in Plague’s sickening death maze. Her eyes began to tear at the thought of the two women. After she had been released back onto campus she had vowed to seek revenge on the beast when she could find no records or anyone on the island who remembered her friends.
Then there was Antipode and Ichigo. Her features softened considerably at the thought of the violet-eyed avatar, and the friendship they would never have. He was evil incarnate, she was a denizen of goodliness. She had made a deal with Antipode, an exchange to unravel some information as to Plague’s whereabouts. It was then she realized that her passion and journey was fruitless. Without Plague, she would never find her friends.
She thought she was going to fall into a sickness, a life obsessed of finding Plague to seek her revenge. Then she met Kathryn. The woman who inspired the scientist to greater heights, brought out the best in the young woman. She was amazing, and yet Shai lamented still. She knew that Kathryn was hopeful that she would be able to walk again, but Shai hadn’t been able to figure the latest problem out and it had been weeks. Weeks too long. Kathryn’s life was passing by and Shai wasn’t producing results. She let her head fall into her hands and sighed deeply.
The student hadn’t even noticed when the other woman had entered the garden. So lost in her own inner turmoil, her thoughts were jarred by the polite gesture. The student looked up and regarded the newcomer. She had a glow about her, a cheerful glow. She had to be new. Shai found it pleasing in any case, her eyes quickly wandering up the girl’s form before resting on her eyes.
She was tall, and had full luxurious red locks flowing down her back. The amber color of her eyes grabbed Shai’s full attention immediately. The student, still overwhelmed by her current emotions offered a polite nod and flashed a grim smile.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
The gesture to wards her was replied with a soft smile, warm, but not overwhelming that it may seem awkward to look at with a stranger. She was just concerned such a woman was staying in such a place. She wodnered if there was a possible way to cheer the girl up from her, grim smiling expression.
She makes a few steps to wards her and stands a few feet from her as to not seem so forward. She bows politely and proceeds in squatting down to look at the plants at ground level, gazing at the flowers around the area before staring forward.
"I am sorry for disturbing your thoughts and your quiet place. But I could not help noticing you looked very sad. I am not asking you to tell me what is wrong, but would it be alright if I try to cheer you up?"
Her suggestion was pure and honest at heart. She looks into her eyes with a caring expression, sympathy for whatever she was going through. It wasn't pity, it wasn't downsizing, it was true. She hated seeing people around her so sorrowful. She stretches her hand down and lifts a flower that was trying to bloom up back on its perch. If the woman didn't want her company, she could fully understand. Sometimes you needed time to yourself and not even someone who wished to make it better would help.
The woman was very pretty. Her long golden locks was what really captured her attention. That and her eyes. They seemed to reflect such emotion in them, as if it were peering into her soul. She hoped the woman would not see her as a disturbance. She very well could be ehr first friend for all she knew.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Shai had been apprehensive, as the student seemed to get closer to the lone student in the gazebo. However, at first glance of the woman’s warm, sincere smile, Shai’s demeanor seemed to ease. Shai’s gray eyes strayed away from the woman politely and wandered over the landscape. Shai always enjoyed fall, when all of the leaves began to change their hue from something evergreen to lush yellows, orange and reds. It was a sea of warmth, despite the crisp bite in the air.
Her attention was ripped away from the scenery at the sound of a soft, melodic voice filling the air. Her eyes wandered, falling on Tani’s docile face. She watched her lips as she spoke, pale and red. As Tani finished Shai sat quietly, deliberating her thoughts. She had wanted to be alone, but the sincere look of concern in Tani’s eyes made Shai reconsider her position. Perhaps, it wouldn’t be so bad to have some company. She lifted her head towards the woman. Shai hadn’t seen this girl around campus before, doubting she would be easy to miss with her lustrous red locks and tall frame.
“I’d like that.” Her soft tone replied. The student shifted in her seat, facing the woman. She crossed one of her slender, toned legs over the other and motioned towards the seat next to her.
“It’d be nice to have someone to talk to.”

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Her quiet pause after her suggestion did not go unnoticed. She wondered if she had come on too strong to her and was beginning to assume her request would be denied. However, her thoughts of being declined were swiftly put to rest by the student's calm and soft tone of voice. She hoped she could possibly cheer the woman of whatever she was going through. She silently thanks her and takes a seat next to her.
Now to see if she could actually brighten her fellow students’ mood. She slips out a deck of cards from the hem of her skirt and dunks all of the cards into her hands. She shows Shai they are just plain, playing cards before organizing them into a neat stack. She was sure Shai was bewildered by what she was doing, but Tani was sure this would peak her interest.
"Ever heard of card throwing?" she asks with a hidden hope she wouldn't be too put off with having tricks to cheer her up. She suddenly shifts the cards from one hand to the other, a good length apart as they fly to her palm from their starting line. Once her little flashy introduction was finished, she looks up in hopes of finding something hanging from a vine or stem. She works her view to the ceiling above them, pinpointing what appeared to be maybe a grape vine that was clinging to the attachments of the windows. A good sized concord grape when she looks closer.
She takes a single card into her index and middle finger and aims for it from her seat. Flinging her arm up above them the card misses just by an inch. She didn't figure she would get it from this position so she tries again. This time it goes slicing into the stem the grape was held by and falls into Shai's lap with a soft pad. Flexing her fingers from that she smiles back to the woman, genuinely.
"Fruits are good for you," she teases. She gathers her cards that she threw from the floor around them and puts them back in a neat hand. Busily doing this, she sighs softly. It takes a lot out of one's wrist to throw cards like that so fast. While busily doing some more shuffling, she adverts her eyes into Shai's before holding out her hand of cards to her. Gesturing to pick a card from her hand, she looks more directly to her to see if she had possibly had her spirits lifted, or at least distracted her from her sorrow.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Shai’s gaze followed the young, tall woman as she neared Shai and took her seat. The student eyed the young woman’s uniform and felt a pang of bitterness before glancing down at her own. Shai was upset that no matter how much she requested for a bigger uniform, the school never seemed to oblige. Self-consciously the student’s slender fingers tugged at the hem of her skirt to cover more of her shapely legs.
Her attention was wrought back to the student when Tani had produced a seemingly average deck of cards. Her curiosity piqued, the student cast a questioning glance towards Tani before narrowing her steel gray eyes back towards the deck.
Tani asked if she’d ever heard of card throwing. Being a big fan of the Batman series the student eagerly nodded her head. A wide smile spread across her pale pink lips as she watched the cards fly from one hand to the other. The dexterity and accuracy to accomplish such a feat so flawlessly was not lost on the student’s mind, her look held the true tone of impress. Shai could feel the anticipation building, but was careful not to be too hopeful in case the young student failed to deliver.
Tani’s gaze wandered around the gazebo, finally settling on a grape vine. She poised herself, settling the card before flinging it towards the vine. It missed the first time, and Shai’s eyes followed the fluttering card back down to the floor of the gazebo. The red headed student took up aim again, apparently finding the right positioning and strength. The card flew, severing the vine and the grape fell neatly into Shai’s lap. The student took up the grape in amazement, lightly fingering the vine, still attached and severed cleanly.
“That was amazing!” She said with a warm smile and a genuine chuckle at the young woman’s humor. The red head rose from her seat, gathering the lost cards and putting them back into the deck. Eager to see what else the young trickster could do, Shai leaned in as she shuffled the deck, spreading the cards and offering for the student to take one.
It seemed as though her lament was dissipating, and she seemed quite cheerful at the prospect of tricks. As a scientist, she was always adapted towards the logical ways of thinking, things such as this mystified her. The student pondered for a moment before picking a card at the edge. She pulled it away and gently took it up in her folded hands.
Ace of diamonds.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
It wasn't as easy as it appeared. She had been card throwing for at least eleven years so this act was well practiced until she was sweating from the muscles in her wrist and upper arms. Humans have no actual muscle mass in their hands which means you really had to work hard in strengthening the muscles and tendons your digits were attached to.
She did notice how the student seemed to pull her skirt down in a vain attempt at hiding her legs. She could sympathize and may possibly be able to let her have a uniform for better comfort. She, herself, just wanted to fit into this new school, this grand college. Aside from her fitting in dilemma, she thought the young woman was very attractive and shouldn't worry about her own opinion, unless it was complimenting. Which it was, though thinking alone it probably wouldn't settle Shai’s self-consciousness.
Her red orbs followed her flow of shuffling cards in her hands absent minded as she waits for her audience to memorize her card.
She had eagerly watched the woman's reaction to her tricks and happily applauded inside for succeeding in bringing her acquaintance's mood up. She could only guess as to where the woman had heard of card throwing, but one thing she did know was that she had to keep her entertained for a short time at least. She hoped the anticipation her audience of one wasn't gathering to high. It was mostly her own nerves that told Shai silently to not be surprised if she failed. But she wanted her to keep smiling, oh how she desired to keep her smiling.
"Have you memorized your card? Alright, please stick it in the deck, wherever you please," she explains before turning her head away, her own cheerful smirk playing politely on her excited expression. Once she felt a shift in the deck, she turns around and shuffles them, but held an even number in both of her hands. With a swift flick of her hands, she juggles them into each other’s palms to mix them up, but it was obvious it was a very flaring sort of shuffle to hold the student's attention. After five times of doing this she goes back to throwing her left hand of cards into the right, before shuffling them like a normal person would.
"Okay, Miss, is this possibly your card?" she questions, pulling the first card from the deck to reveal a Queen of Spades. She notices how the card doesn't fit well with the woman's expression and looks at it with a dramatic shock.
"Oh no! This wasn't your card was it?! MMMmm... hmmm... oh well, we'll make it your's then," she says quickly before flicking the Queen into the student's hand and low and behold, it was an Ace of Diamonds fluttering into the girl's lap.
"I do hope that's your card then."

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
At Tani’s request the student put the card back in an inconspicuous place in the deck. The student had been so meticulous with the card positioning that she was sure Tani wouldn’t be able to find it. Tani turned back towards the eager student and shuffled the deck. Her dexterity with the deck was impressive, and amazing. She juggled them beautifully and the student was entranced with the shimmering red and white color as the cards flew where the girl desired them.
The student was thrilled as Tani turned over the first card in the deck, expecting that by some miracle the woman had singled out her card. The student scrunched up her nose and shook her head when asked if the card was hers.
With a quick flick the Queen of Spades fluttered through the air, and as it landed in Shai’s lap; it was magically revealed that the Ace of Diamonds was the card sitting in her lap. The student stared at the card for a moment before picking it up to examine it.
“How did you do that?!” She exclaimed, apparently dumbfounded with the card she held. After a moment she handed the card back to Tani with a warm smile.
“That was amazing.” She said in awe before shaking her head. “Where are my manners.” She said rather embarrassed. She lightly wiped her hands on her blouse and extended it toward the beaming red head.
“I’m Shai, and to be quite honest with you, you need to be on t.v.” She said cheerfully.

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
She lightly taps her own knee in laughter from Shai's comment about being on t.v. She gets nervous with just one person watching her. Thirty million viewers wouldn't make her anymore confident. She waits for the woman to put the card back into her deck before shuffling the cards, all but one, quickly back into their pouch, noticing the hand extended towards her. She smiles to accept the hand, deciding to end with one more trick.
She casually goes to connect her hand with Shai's, before her arm triggers back like a gun. A card, somehow... someway, lodges itself inbetween the sutdent's thumb and index finger. The hand she was about to shake now had an Ace of Diamonds, fitting quite smoothly without any papercuts, while Tani cheerfully shakes it.
"My name is Tani. And honestly, I think I would die if I performed for people older then eighteen."
She had more confidence with children. Children were easy to amuse, much easier. She could perform for a small group of adults because it was less stressful to keep everyone's attention... and less likely for her to become frozen in place. That was one of the reasons she didn't proceed in a talent show. She shifts her thoughts to try and push the memory back.
Once letting go of her hand, she slides the card out of her hand and swiftly makes it dissapear when she flips her hands inside and then back out to her palms. Just for amusement, she did the object behind the ear trick and placed the card into her fellow student's palm.
"A little souvenoir for you. I have like... ten other packs that haven't been opened yet," she spoke reassuringly, "And I don't want to be on t.v. either. I don't want to perform for money or else it may lead me down the wrong path of why I love card tricks. But I do very much appreciate your compliment. My only payment is to cheer you up. Seems I didn't do a bad job... hopefully."

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
The student smiled with delight as the card wedged itself in between her fingers. She glanced down incredulously to the card and back up to Tani’s cheerful features, as the young student took up Shai’s hand in a polite shake.
The snowy haired student nodded understandingly at the student’s assessment of her own confidence level. Shai bit back the impulse to mention that she was slightly older than Tani’s targeted audience. Her steel gray gaze followed Tani’s hands as the student continued to manipulate the cards in her palms. Another smile was brought to the student’s face as Tani pulled seemingly pulled the card out of thin air and handed it to Shai. A souvenir.
The student graciously accepted the card and lightly folded her hands over it. She held a bit of reservation in taking the card, but the fiery student assured her that she had plenty to spare.
The student nodded again as Tani began to explain a bit more in depth about why and when she chose to display her talent, and Shai thought it quite noble. Most people were so blinded by ambition and success that they begin to lose track on why they delved into their respected talents and career choices to begin with. Shai had had her own reservations about the applications of her Nanotech, but was always reassured that the experiments she was working on were her passion. She did them because she chose to do them, for the betterment of mankind.
The student felt like the Sword of Damocles was hanging over her head. How could she be here so cheerful when she was failing her dearest friend? Still, the presence of the fiery young woman before her, put the girl at ease.
“Indeed. I have to say if you hadn’t showed up, I’d probably still be here sulking. I came with the intention of being alone to sort out my thoughts, but I’m glad you came.” She offered with a sincere smile, gently turning over the card in her hands.
“Life out here gets hard sometimes.”

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Tucking her deck into her skirt, she places her hands freely on her lap. The student seemed more cheerful then before. That had been her goal and it apparently had worked. Shai still seemed to think back on her problem, but its not as if Tani was trying to make her forget something important.
She nods to Shai's statement about being alone and sulking. She was glad her mood had at least risen some. Her gaze lowers to the card being played with in her hands. She wondered what sort of situation the woman was going through. But even though she had spent some time with her, she felt it would still be rude to ask. She'll let it be for now.
"As I said before, I'm sorry for disturbing you. But it was not as if I could walk away when I see someone sad like you were. Well, I am glad I could help with what little I could and I also hope your problem will be solved soon."
She brushes her arms off absent minded, busily thinking of what to make of this island. She settles into a comfortable position in her chair, the silence falling around them made it quite easy to hear the wind rattling the windows of this greenhouse.
"This is my first day on school grounds. I'm still confused about where everything is but... I am hopeful for a good turnout. At least I'll have one familiar face to see in the halls."

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
The student’s hands slowly rose up to trail through her snowy locks, her slender fingers wrapping absentmindedly around the tresses. Shai narrowed her gaze politely on the student beside her, casually leaning back against the railing of the gazebo. The soft winds cascaded a gentle rap against the wooden shutters, the scent of rain fresh on the crisp breeze.
Shai nodded acknowledging the student’s dilemma. She remembered when she had first arrived on campus. While it had been several years ago, due to her comatose state it only felt as if it were less than a year ago. She considered asking if the rude, rather grotesque pilot was still around, but then considering she didn’t care much for the man anyway, she decided against it.
The student quickly, but silently reflected on how hard it had been for her to make friends. Her eyes traveling down the student’s tall, curvy frame. Tani certainly shouldn’t have any trouble, she was quite pleasing on the eyes. Shai wasn’t necessarily bitter, but slightly jealous of the fiery hue of the woman’s hair and the lack of color in her own.
“The school is quite confusing at first.” The student answered honestly. “After a while you grow accustomed to it, just like any place I suppose.” The student said, her eyes going slightly distant. Perhaps Tani would be fortunate enough never to encounter the evils of the island. Shai considered telling her, but considered the implications the student would receive. She couldn’t have Tani running around the island telling people that Shai was crazed and talking about evil creatures lurking around the island.
“As a sophomore, the only thing I can offer you is to never get detention.” She said with a sly wink. “Don’t talk back to the teachers, and certainly make sure you’re always in uniform while attending classes. I’m not sure why, but they’re really strict about it here.”
“And don’t worry,” The student said with a wide smile before nodding her head towards the sky. “The sun’ll be back out in no time so you can enjoy some of these beaches around here.”

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
Tani takes her time in taking in the view of the place herself. It apparently had been a cold, restless night for these flowers... that even the windows could not barracade them from having the chilling breeze cross over their delicate bodies. She envied how they never would have to suffer the fragile balance of acceptance among their peers.
Tani blinks at hearing Shai's statement. A sophomore? She hadn't realized she had been talking to someone who was an elder student here. Keeping that in thought, she brushes a few strands of hair behind her ear. Though she loved her hair and thought it to be nice it was sometimes a bit in the way. Locks of hair never wanted to stay behind her left ear for some reason. She makes a quick glance to Shai's white locks and compares them to her own. Though white, they did the girl justice in making her look so youthful, yet so mature.
She chuckles at her 'friends?' warning about not making any trouble for herself. She nods, though. It would be rude to not at least act like that bit of informationw asn't helpful. Truly it was since she hadn't even thought about her behavior, but she highly doubted her personality would lead to problems with the office. She was well-behaved... always had been, no doubt always will be.
"I'll make sure not to cause trouble. Thank-you for the advice. I've already heard some... strange strange things about this island. Students dissapearing and coming back with amnesia, a laboraty off the coast, some girl even said something about some sort of wild animals around the school. Its interesting... and seeing as how frantic some of them are I'm not naive enough to not think something could very well be up for all I know," she thinks out loud, voicing her opinion on the place and it 'rumors'.
"Aside from that I... like to stay in groups with people when I go anywhere. Its not that much fun to go to the beach by yourself..."

Re: Ask the Rain (For Tani)
The student watched vigilantly, her eyes always seeming to wander towards the woodland area outside of the gazebo, as if expecting something or someone. Shai was doing her best to keep her glances casual at best, the wandering eyes of a free spirit she supposed. A soft chuckle snapped her attention back towards her new acquaintance.
Shai hadn’t intended for the look to cross her features. Tani had veered the conversation towards the myriad of rumors she’d heard around the island. At the mere mention of the rumors the student seemed to grimace painfully, quickly bringing her hand up to run over her eyes and up through her hair in a vain attempt to hide the look. Shai remembered when she had first come to the island. Surely she’d heard similar rumors, about the diminishing student body, and yet the student population was so large it hardly seemed likely that it was growing smaller.
The carelessness of the comment had aroused images of her own friends that had disappeared while she had been in recovery. While the student surely hadn’t deserved the anger that was boiling in the pit of Shai’s stomach, it didn’t stop it from being there. She could feel her cheeks flushing a bright pink as her rage began to subside.
Shai forced a smile and shook her head. “Mean girls. Every campus has them. They try to scare away the freshman with stories of things that go bump in the night. The creatures on the island.” The student did her best to create a semblance of a chuckle. “I’ve barely noticed any life on this island…As for the buildings off shore, I can assure you it’s an research facility for the marine life.” Her voice was a bit shaky, but the statements seemed sincere.
“As for amnesia, to be honest I have to say it’s actually quite common here. A lot of girl’s that like to try spelunking, mountain climbing and end up hurt. Most of them are freshman who didn’t pay close attention during the seminar. I can attest to that.” She said thumbing a small scar, hidden by her long locks. “I don’t remember, but I was told that I must have been exploring one of the caves and fell down a volcanic shaft; suffered severe head trauma. I was in a coma for nearly three years, my father signed my release to stay here. To ship me back to the States would have been dangerous, and Shokushu has an accredited medical facility.” She ended with a rather distant look, lowering her hands to the card in her lap, thumbing it again lightly.
