Karen swore, pushing through the water. She was floundering, struggling in the water as a current threatened to drag her away. And Karen was strong, and athlete. Dammit, this couldn't be happening to her! She was fighting for her life, and it was because she had gone out of her way to avoid any monsters!

This whole mess started when, after trying to study for six hours straight, she had finally began to wig out. It had been a hot day, and she had gotten sticky from sweat and smelling up a storm worse than her daily workouts. She had taken a shower and scrubbed herself until her skin was red, but she couldn't bring herself back to study in the muggy heat of the late afternoon. It was Saturday, so there were no classes, but that only meant she was even more bored than she would have been.

Unfortunately, her other options were pretty limited. It was too damn hot to do sports, martial arts training (which she had begun fanatically), and she didn't really get along with most of the other girls. She didn't really know what to make of them; the few stories she DID hear about them made her think twice. Apparently the girls here were half-mad with hedonism and sex! She had hoped to organize a student constable body, or anything, to help establish some order and keep mischief from hindering the people serious about their studies. But she had found precious few of them who seemed like they'd be willing to do such a thing... and if all of them just wanted to, uh, "have fun" all night, she didn't want to turn the entire dorm against her.

Without sports, socializing, or training, she didn't really know what to do. She could read, but... she had been doing enough of that with the studying. It made her reluctant, but the one thing she wanted to do, that she could get some exercise with, was swimming. But the water was dangerous, and her swimsuit...

She held up the blue one-piece she had previously worn; the neck had been hopelessly stretched by a watery monster, pulled down around her ample bosom. Unless she wanted to give people a show, she wasn't wearing that!

Digging through her closet, she had to cringe at her remaining clothes. All her other T-shirts were in the wash, and that meant she wouldn't have anything to change into. It'd be late when she'd get back, and that meant she could get sick without dry clothes. Not with the walk back she'd have; she had recently realized that swimming where the students didn't might be -safer-... but that was pretty far out of the way of the dorms.

What that left her with in actual swimwear was... oh, my god. She stared at the yellow swimsuit that was basically nothing... it was a basically two straps that came together in a 'U' that would run between her legs... and would only cover her breasts with a thin stretch of fabric that went over her stomach and chest to run behind her neck, and a split-off that joined the two straps over her (presumed cleavage). If it had been just the 'V' swimsuit, instead of splitting just at the nipples, there wouldn't have been enough fabric to cover them completely. She didn't know if it made her feel better that the back had a bit more, a thicker joining strap above the curve of her butt.

She glared at it, as if offended, then muttered. She had bought it at the lark and suggestion of a friend... and maybe the memory would improve her mood as of late. With it, sunscreen, goggles, and a towel, she set off to beat the heat...

And one fast and deep current later, she had been swept away from the island of the campus. She had tried to swim to the side and out of the current frantically, and had managed at least to avoid being taken further than a mile or so... but it seemed impossible to make it back, tired as she was. Desperate, afraid, she began to float and drift... but as she did, she spotted something!

She had been so focused on the island of Shokushu campus that she missed another, smaller one nearby! Turning, she swam desperately for it, her feet finally finding rock and sand underfoot.

Karen slowly dragged herself onto the beach, her body glistening and heaving with strain, but coughing up water and black hair tangled about her... she felt like a drowned rat, but she was alive.

The beach sand made a comfortable place to recooperate from a life-or-death swim. The surf slid across the glittering white powder in sheets of foam. Karen sputtered, taking in a few glorious, effortless breathes and crawled her way onto the rippled expanse of drier sand. It coated her palms in warmth. By the time she collapsed in a patch of palm shade her skin had a fine layer of dust all over, like powdered diamonds. For a long while she rested, paying the sun no mind as it inched overhead, until the sky deepened into a richer shade of blue, darkening to purple at the horizon. The shadow Karen had been laying in had long since shifted sideways, and the heat had finally penetrated her exhaustion. Groggy, she could see her bejeweled forearm past her blinking.

Shokushu lay perhaps a league from shore, a long green ridge floating atop the choppy, cerulean sea. Beneath her, sand stretched a good stretch to either side and curved out of sight . Inland, a thick tangle of woods bordered the beach. The flora had a different appearance than the jungles around Shokushu. Near campus the jungles were dense, and only grew more overgrown as one progressed. The undergrowth was knotted, smelling of mildew and fresh shoots, and overhead the sunlight came through in ragged patches. On this island on the other hand, the plantlife was rife with fruit and colorful flowers, and most of the nastier vines appeared to be absent. The trees were close, but admitted light, and broke apart regularly into navigable gaps and clearings. The whole of it resembled nothing so much as a vast garden, neglected enough that it had regained an aspect of wilderness.

Above the treeline, a slender spire lofted toward the sinking sun. The steepled roof pierced the underside of the golden disk, creating an eclipse of light around the stone tower. From this range the architecture was unclear, but obviously decorative, for Karen could detect faint patterns in the stonework as well as numerous evidences of artistic excesses. Nearby a bird of paradise fluttered onto a piece of driftwood a few paces away. It eyed Karen without fear, and perhaps it felt that her shimmering, sloped hips and bright yellow garment were a challenge to its own splendor, for it puffed up it's emerald chest and preened aggressively, tossing the sapphire plumage spilling from its neck. Hopping forward, it warbled a complex set of keys, regarding the woman intently.

She slept hard, collapsed on the sandy beach as she recovered from the terrible accident of the swim. Breathing gently, she cracked open her eyes slowly, feeling the residue of salt on her skin. Ugh.

Sitting up slowly, she groaned and absently adjusted her flimsy swimsuit as she took in her surroundings. The woods surprised her, although the fearful thought that maybe the... THINGS they ran into lived here overtook her mind. She stood up like a bolt, looking and listening desperately as she watched for anything unusual.

Turning her head, she looked up at the high stone tower beyond the trees. She couldn't help but whistle lowly... wow. She wished she had a training sword. Looking around, she located a sizable stick.

She had been moving towards it when she saw the gorgeous plumed bird. "My god." She blurts, staring. It was beautiful... and the sudden sight of it surprised her. She edged slowly for the stick. "H-hi there... uh, easy. I don't have anything for you..."

Karen's approach did not seem to bother the bird, which turned its head to the side to regard her with a single golden eye. It whistled again in mimickry of her earlier expression toward the tower, and began to rock its head back and forth. "Wow." it exclaimed in a shrill voice. "Wow. Wow. My God!" the bird uttered, following up with a second whistle. Deciding that Karen wasn't particularly interesting afterall it flapped along to perch on a nearby fruit tree, dipping its bill toward a hanging mango for a twilight repast. Somewhere in the canopy an answering whistle sounded belatedly, alerting the bird to the presence of another. Looking up sharply, it responded with a raucous squawk and returned to eating.

By this time the sun had sunk low, summoning rippled bands of coral pink into the blue and violet panorama of the sky. The clouds were mere smokey wisps, tinged with golden filigree, all but for a ominous black smudge far off toward Shokushu. The distant storm flashed briefly. At the same moment, the breeze picked up, dusting off the taut body of Karen with cool fingers. Her hair streamed out like a black ribbon. She appreciated the drop in temperature, but the oncoming monsoon that the wind heralded posed a difficulty. The beach provided no shelter, even if the storm waited a few hours to hit, and her sparse garment was less than ideal protection. Luckily, there seemed to be an well used trail opening into the jungle. It did not take a genius to guess that it likely led to the tower, and possibly civilization.

She blinks at the bird as it speaks, then chuckles a bit nervously as he flies off. "Strange critter..." She commented to herself, folding her arms under her breasts. Looking around, she belatedly realized how hungry she was, the growl a moment later just confirming things.

She shivered at the brush of wind on her body, licking her lips a bit. Karen moved for the trees, looking up at the fruit... and then the tower. She forged ahead, muttering under her breath. "Here we go... hopefully they'll be helpful." If anyone was even there anymore. Holding herself tighter, she started into a light jog... the storm worried her, and she didn't want to catch a chill just because she was in an outfit that had less fabric than most shorts. She hoped somehow she'd get back to the island somehow soon... or home, an even more distant wish.

A sports bra would have been preferable for jogging, but karen couldn't very well do anything about that. Consequently, her breasts bounced rhythmically as she traversed the path, threatening every few moments to dislodge the thin straps that held them. Finally the pain forced her to cup them in her palms to steady them, an embarrassing position that nobody was around to view, thankfully. Karen passed a plethora of interesting flowers along the way, regretting that she could not stop to more fully appreciate the tantalizing perfumes they were shedding. At least the crisp breeze carried the scents to her, and caused the dewy blossoms to bob and meander for her pleasure. The insects had the decency not to make an appearance as the storm grew closer. Thunder rolled menacingly from behind. She made good time on the hard packed dirt, but her swimsuit was riding up between her flexing legs due to constant motion. There was no time to rectify the situation, so she simply sped up her flight. Her way twisted arbitrarily, slowing her. Clearly the trail was meant as a scenic route, inconvenient as that may be at the moment.

As the wind that swept down from the sky transformed into a series of buffeting gusts, Karen broke past the dense vegetation. She found herself standing on a hillside field, carpeted in a soft grass and festooned by small wildflowers in shades of yellow and crimson. The trees behind her waved their branches urgently. The grass flattened in great waves. Thunder crashed closeby like the crack of a cannon, lighting up the dusk for a split second. The tower stood against the dimming horizon, and Karen could discern now a number of other buildings surrounding it, an estate of sorts in a style that could be called gothic, but less dramatic and overdecorated. When lightning split the trees behind her the woman picked up the pace again, for the gusts were quickly building into a frightening gale that was plucking the heads of flowers from the field and casting them ferociously into the air. There was no question any longer whether or not she would reach shelter before the rains fell, for the first cold splatters had already splashed along her back and bare legs, but she could still make the estate ahead of the worst of the storm. Close now, she felt and heard the sudden overwhelming patter that quickly drenched her in a sheet of falling water.

Karen was beyond flustered by the time she saw the storm approaching even quicker, nearer. Holding her own... tatas in her palms wasn't exactly dignified. But she was in worse than nothing, and she was running like hell. Squirming at the feeling the sawing of the swimsuit caused, she gritted her teeth and began to move faster.

"Dammit, what happened to straight paths." She vented, looking around and stumbling as the gusts rained down on her now, making her stumble. The shock of thunder nearly made her scream, and she ran all the faster for the tower, relieved to see the clearing. She frantically glanced at the houses before racing for the tower, seeing no one and not knowing if she was going to be getting any help at all.

The first raindrop made her jump, the surprising cold on her skin startling her as much as the sudden flash and noise of nearby lightning. She had to slow to 'grab herself' again, then lowered her head and raced for the estate, hair dampening and body slickening as she tried to race right inside! God, it was so cold, and it wouldn't get any easier tonight, she knew!

"RRrrrraaaaaaahhhh!" She roared, racing down that last stretch and running hard. She'd damn well jump-kick down a door if she saw one, at this rate!

Streaking headlong through the torrent, Karen's feet exchanged the slick mud and grass for firm cobblestones. They were smooth and bruisingly hard, but gave better purchase, and in no time she had gained the tower itself. Not only was there a doorway in, slablike and solid, but there was a roofed overhang sloping out from above it. That scanty shelter and the apparent strength of the door dissuaded the young woman from attempting any violent entry, athlete or not. Huddled underneath the eaves in the cold, gusty darkness, she noticed a brass bell suspended over the doorway, a piece of chain dangling from the striker within. Even here, the rain sometimes blew in sideways, dousing her again and again. There was nothing to do but to shake the chain, so she did, clanging the bell over and over in exhaustion.

It did not take long before she heard the a hollow scraping behidn the door, followed by a thunk and the metallic rasp of a deadbolt being drawn open. The door swung abruptly open, and a face peered out into the darkness. The face belonged to a young woman, lit by the flickering light of a glass lantern. The girl was strikingly pretty, possessing wide emerald eyes and full raspberry colored lips that were currently pressed together in concentration. Looking to side to side, she caught sight of Karen and startled back in dismay, whether from the estranged student's apparent distress or her garb it was difficult to determine. Her mouth fell open, and she stepped out of the doorway to lift the lantern for closer scrutiny, and Karen could see that she wore a curious version of a maid's uniform. The white apron and frilly accoutrements fit the image, but instead of a somber black dress she wore one of a deep cherry crimson, and the skirt was cut just above the knees as if purposely intended to set off her pale, sheer hose. The maid remained flummoxed, her long black tresses dampening gradually from every errant breeze, and finally blurted "What are you doing out here?!"

Teeth chattering, she looked to the maid with confused eyes. Arms wrapped around her barely-concealed breasts, she tried to press in a little... not forcefully, but more as if seeing if the maid would let her by. Frankly... she had expected an obscure island in the middle of nowhere to be completely abandoned. She'd be worried if she wasn't so damn cold!

"Please! It's way way way too cold out here! Just give me a place to get dry and stay warm, please??" She dances, attempting to keep warm in the horrible storm, and push in gently.

The maid remains where she is, gaping, for a moment before succumbing to social instincts and retreating back inside the doorway in a rustling of frills. Karen of course follows directly behind and slams the door gratefully shut. The staircase ran along the side of the stone walls, circling upward into the wooden ceiling. The maid flicked a switch and the room was bathed in the glow of recessed light fixtures hidden amongst the rafters. A richly patterned rug softened the floor, and a welcoming arrangement of plush white sofas and chairs stood ranged around a low wrought iron table. Tiny violet flowers were embroidered upon the white upholstery by hand, and the table was delicately and Victorian, all lacy filigree stemming from an elegant central post.

Now that the two were safe from the cold and the rain, the maid spun in her scarlet uniform and sat her lantern on the table, dousing it as an afterthought, and then sat carefully down on one of the sofa's. "You really shouldn't be here." began the girl, nervously taking up a comb and pulling it through her hair. "How did you even manage to find the place? Nevermind." Shaking her head, she tapped her toe against the rug rapidly, making the midnight leather of her heels glitter in the light. Those striking eyes of hers scrutinized Karen intensely, so much so that the woman's cheeks darkened and she eventually turned aside. "There's a wardrobe over there. Go can go ahead and dress if you want. There's really only dresses and uniforms like mine, but it's better than you dripping all over the rug or cushions. Another glance at Karen and her cheeks flamed ferociously. "Besides....what you have on it...ahh...revealing."

Karen couldn't help but wonder who this maid was, or where she was. But she was more relieved to be inside, shivering and shaking from the sheer cold. The look drew a blush from the martial artist too, arms crossing over her chest and looking to where the maid directed. At her insistence, she smiled wanly, then hurried to the wardrobe. "Do you have a towel? I need to dry off before I put anything on." She quickly dug through, grabbing one of the first she saw and pulling it out.

Shaking, she laid the outfit out on a sofa and looked to her. "Where is this place?" She adds, trying to see if there was a place she could shake and drip without soaking precious rugs and furniture. Her sense of politeness and propriety didn't measure up to where she was... but frankly, she didn't want to upset whomever owned this place.

The young maid watched Karen rummage through the assortment of clothing by way of frequent sidelong glances. Her cheeks remained delicately flushed, but her manner was demur and composed as she sat in her chair with hands folded neatly in her lap, ankles prettily crossed. "There are no towels in the tower." the maid said apologetically, standing at once. "But there's a fireplace if that's any consolation. I'll start a flame for you." She set about fetching wood as soon as she had finished her promise, and hefted two small logs. She knelt before the fireplace and stacked the wood in the ashes, piling on sticks of kindling from a nearby box. Her uniform rustled as she worked, and her legs and hips flexed every time she bent forward, drawing the bodice of her dress tight over her pert breasts. None of this would have been particularly noteworthy except that the short cut of her skirt and its slight flare conspired to display the indecent bottom curves of the woman's supple buttocks and sheer scarlet undergarments whenever she leaned, which was frequently, but never for more than a moment or two. A man might have dismissed this and congratulated himself on his luck, but to Karen something felt out of place. Surely any proper young woman would be keenly aware of her clothing and how they moved, and the schoolgirl was therefore forced to wonder whether or not the maid was showing off intentionally. The maid finished setting flame to the logs and proceeded to elaborately smooth out the lacy hem of his skirt, drawing attention to her long thighs and, and dusted off her bottom in such a way that her hands lingered and her cleavage deepened, exposing the slender curve of her neck. But all of this was done with an unconscious ease, until she caught Karen's gaze and quickly looked away. "What did you choose?" she asked, clearing her throat. "A uniform or one of the gowns?"

She was watching her, a bit surprised how she subtly flaunted and showed herself off. Karen wasn't sure why her eyes went to the deepened cleavage as she smoothed the hem of her skirt, but Karen mentally noted that she certainly didn't seem to be a man in disguise...

Which still begged the question, of what a maid and mansion was doing on an island like this. Much less a town. Half-dressed in one of the maid uniforms, she blinked and looked down at herself as she straightened up the shoulders. "um... one of the uniforms. I wasn't really paying attention."

She really should ask why the maid was trying to flirt with her. But instead, she phrased a more careful question. "If I may ask... who owns this place? I really didn't expect to find such a.. decadent home out here." Her expression was one of curiosity and confusion as Karen tried to kneel down and settle on the floor by the fireplace.

The skirt was fanning out over her legs, and her feet tangled in it a bit. Struggling for a moment, she took a few longer moments before bending her knees and settling on them carefully. The bodice was quite tight around her breasts, and her wet skin made the outfit wrinkle and plaster against her skin where the uniform was thinnest.

The fire was blooming over the logs steadily, transforming the bark into ruby light. Steam hissed from invisible seams, a smoky perfume. There was a crash of thunder, and the lights sputtered out. The shadows lept back around the two girls, but the orange glow of the flames surrounded them warmly, and the dark silhouettes cavorted about in frustration, shrinking back to bide their time. Unconsciously the two maidens edged closer to the protection of the hearth, sliding along their silken skirts. A certain silence existed between them, a quiet born from a shared anxiety that was manifest in the relentless, muted cacophany of wind and rain outside the stone walls. They watched, hip to supple hip, the intermittent fall of embers upon the fireplace floor that sparked and shimmered like ruddy stars.

The heat seeped through Karen's gauzy bodice, drying her chilled and damp skin. She could feel it suffuse the stretched fabric that lightly constricted her breasts. She wished she had a bra, but that was a luxury she had gone without for the better part of a day, and at least she was covered, even if her nipples did protrude visibly from the silk that left no need to imagine the shape of her voluptuous bosom. Beside her, the other woman unsuccessfully stifled a yawn, and rested her head against Karen’s supportive shoulder, letting her inky tresses fall caressingly down Karen’s spine. Her warm breath touched Karen’s rising décolletage with humidity. “Our Mistress…..” she murmured belatedly, eyes serenely closed. “That’s who this whole place belongs to.” The maid snuggled closer, unmindfully placing a palm on the other woman’s thigh. “My name is Alice. I like the uniform you chose….green looks good on you.” Alice gave a mewling sigh, shifting her weight to lean into Karen’s hip. Her flesh was as warm as the flames. “Once the rain stops….you should leave the island.” Alice yawned. “You shouldn’t…stay here…too long…” Alice’s breath deepened into the gentle rhythm of the asleep.

Karen shivered at the sound of the thunder, a sharp punctuation to the wind and rain. She inched close as she could to the forming, sputtering flames, staring peacefully at the tongues of fire and flying embers as she warmed up and dried off.

She almost missed how the maid, Alice, began to move in. Stiffening sharply, her lungs filled with air and her breasts strained against the fabric. Alice's hair teased Karen's back, and her breath teased the cleft of her breasts. She got very still and stiff (perhaps in more than one way), and she tried to move herself to turn away that breath just a bit.

Geez. She had heard a lot about the female students on Shokushu... now she had to wonder if the maid was the same. ...Actually, Karen had little doubt of that. The thought made her flush; she was used to staving off guys... but other girls? It felt... well, mean. She put an arm gently around Alice, trying to sit as stoic as a samurai... the thought was a little humorous.

She almost missed what she murmured as well. Blinking, she tilted her head, lips pursed to ask... but then the maid settled off to sleep. Shaking her head slightly, she just tried to sit comfortably with her like that, her warm skin and crackling fire very welcome to the cold and tired girl. Before she had another thought in her head, she had already nodded off into slumber...
