Sayaka rushed to her classroom. “I’M LAAAAAATE! I’M GONNA BE LATE! I’M GONNA BE LATE! I’M GONNA BE EVEN MORE LATE, UWAAAAH!” She munched on some toast and ran into her classroom, before tripping on her desk and giving the whole class a show of her striped pink and white panties. So embarrassing!

CRASH my head turns away from the window. It's soo hot. I rather not be stuck in this boring class. Sciences are more my thing but I'm stuck with these electives.

Whoa! I wasn't expecting to be flashed nor the rest of the class that giggles at the new girl. I'm stopped from joining in at the mention of my name by the professor. She announces who the new girl is and that she doesn't speak English well. Suffice it to say I'm tasked with catching her up with notes and serving as a translator.

How much can the new girl follow? In any case I have to switch places with another student to sit next to the girl. I hate giving up the window seat! Especially in this boring ass class. US history as if I give a shit. It wasn't as if I was going to use it nor did it reflect on my history.

“Hi, I'm Midori,” I whisper in Japanese. “I'll be your translator? How much English do you know? Not that it matters for this class.”

“I know some english!” She says cheerfully. The new student smiled with her big, sparkling green eyes. She adjusted her red ribbon. She says in English “Nice to meet you! My name is Sayaka!”

They received a look from their professor. I glanced back. The professor barely older than I was seeing that I started ultra late. But the professor continues on after an awkward moment.

For now I keep things to our native tongue. “Not bad. But the less you display the more you get to goof off and play ignorant. Speak like your English isn't so good and come across as ignorant of the Western way … unless you're one of those brainy types that wants to do well.”

“Sure! I only know english because of my mom!” She ate another one of her riceballs and put her feet on the desk. “So, I’m Sayaka! And you?”

This time the professor admonished the student. I translated though I didn't match her tone.

“It's cliche but she says no eating in class unless you brought enough for everyone. And feet off the desk.” Once that was settled and the professor went back to her boring lecture we returned to our conversation. I pretended that I was paying attention taking my notes in kanji. Of course Sayaka could tell there was little subsistence to them.

I HATE THIS CLASS.

SO BORING.

IT'S TOO FUCKING HOT.

Were just of a few things I wrote. Not that the professor was capable of reading it even if she was standing over my shoulder.

“Midori. Green. My name is a color. Something the girls here wouldn't get. Midori and Shiro are pretty common names.”

“Hey, can I copy your work?”

I glance down at the kanji tapping the page with the tip of my pen. “My notes? Sure can but there not the best. I do have a few detailed things but much of this note book has doesn't have much about the class itself. It should get you caught up about the important stuff though. Doing anything after class?”

“Yay!” She copies her notes. Her hair shines in the sun. “Thank you so much!”

“Not a problem. Though I'm sure I have the worse notes. Only taking the class because it's an elective so as long as I have enough material to pass tests I don't fret over the lessons. Are you enthused about history? What's your favorite class?” It feels odd being able to speak in class so openly.

The added perk of no one else understanding us, as far as I know anyway only adds to it. Many of the girls were fluent in two languages or more.

“I really do like history! And...I’m about conversational in English, but barely!”

“History?” I mull that answer over in my head. “Japanese history or US?”

It looks like if anyone should be copying from the other it should be the other way around. But as long as I'm passing I'm not too worried about this course. Despite the country I just never got into history. Sure there was the big events that everyone knew, world wars and such. Perspectives change from place to place.

“Japanese history!”

“I adore Blade of the Immortal.” Sayaka cheerfully says.
