Description
Clare Creamer ought to be staring in her own movie, “The California Blonde”, because she’s a walking, talking (and shopping) stereotype. Blonde, tanned and toned she looks like she stepped straight out of central casting and onto a private Malibu beach or into Kitson with her over indulgent dad’s black AmEx card.
Only 5’3”, Clare is the shortest member of her immediate family by a good bit. Like everyone in her family, Clare had a chubby period. However, hers seems to have come and gone while her dad’s did not. Like all bad things, it passed and now Clare is a ‘squat’ little thing; compact and athletic with strong arms, a flat tummy and a toned, shapely bottom (and legs too but who cares about them?)
Clare is very blasé about her hair, normally. When she wants to be all dolled up, however, Clare’s very capable of doing something extravagant with her blonde hair. For most days, wearing her hair down, in a ponytail or twisted around a pencil is sufficient. Clare does need to be somewhat careful when it comes to her hair. Too little attention and care and it will ‘explode’, which is fine for a Sunday but would be a social disaster on any other day.
Her closet is a near bottomless pit, a real monument to style, self-indulgence, consumerism and parents who could not say no to their daughter. For school, Clare wears the proper uniform though she’s never been shy about adding her own touches, like rolling her skirt up because knee length just does not do her justice. Outside of class, there really isn’t a typical Clare outfit because her style is extremely mood dependent. Some days it’s a brand new skirt, sandals and a spaghetti strapped tank top and other days it’s a pair of vintage jeans, sneakers and a tee shirt.
Background Information
Until boarding the chartered flight to Shokushu, Clare spent the entirety of her life in the sun-drenched city of Angels, Los Angeles, California. California and Clare fit like two peas in a pod.
Clare’s parents were incredibly successful, professionally. As a result, Clare never wanted for anything and it was extremely rare for one of her whims to go unfulfilled. As successful as they were professionally, Clare parents were awful as a married couple. For nearly two decades they bickered at each other before finally divorcing when Clare was fifteen.
All her life Clare’s parents have tried to encourage her to excel academically. And all her life Clare has been almost totally disinterested by school. Most troubling for her parents and teachers is that Clare is a bright girl; she just doesn’t apply herself beyond doing the absolute bare minimum to pass.
Her parents, especially her dad, tried everything to get Clare to do better. Nothing worked and by the time her third year of high school rolled around, he gave up. Not coincidentally, his newfound attitude towards Clare’s grades coincided with his marriage to a girl who was only five years older then his daughter.
Clare graduated from high school in the middle of the pack and despite extremely high ACT scores; she was rejected from all the colleges she applied to. Apparently, Harvard was not as easy to get into as Legally Blonde implied. Even a video entrance essay featuring Clare in a bikini was not enough to secure her admission. Clare was thrilled with the idea of taking a year off, believing it would be a nonstop party.
Instead, the year off proved to be a tremendous bore and Clare became determined to get into college. Unfortunately, nothing about her transcript had really changed and she was soundly rejected, again. The only school that accepted Clare was a small college she had never heard of and could not recall applying to. But acceptance was acceptance and Clare was off to Shokushu.
Personality Information
Likes: dogs (there’s a picture of her boxer/lab mix Oski on her desk), shopping, the sun, music, gossip, creative writing, singing in the shower, teddy bears, being the center of attention
Dislikes: cigarettes/smokers, lying liars who lie, cheesy pick up lines, not getting her own way, math, public speaking, SUVs
Profile
Clare has always been a daddy’s girl, a real princess. From the cradle she was spoiled extravagantly because her dad found it easier to give the women in his life whatever they wanted rather then dealing with their high pitched shrieking. From a very young age, Clare was a socialite: engaging, polite, friendly, charming (and pretty). It’s possible she’s the only preschooler in history to carry her construction paper, pencils, crayons and safety scissors to school in a Prada backpack.
Because of her upbringing, Clare is used to getting her own way and when she doesn’t, she can be a bit of a brat about it. As a youngster she was prone to loud tantrums complete with screeching, door slamming, foot stomping, waterworks (tears) and grand pronouncements of “hate” for her parents (or sister) whenever things when contrary to how she wanted them. The tantrums are less volatile now but Clare is every bit as keen to get her own way now as she was then. Clare can be a bit of a brat and a snot when she wants to be, her parents doted on her and she expects that sort of treatment from everyone.
Clare is self-confident, most of the time. She can obsess over things, one of her friends not speaking to her for instance, but by and large she’s reasonably sure of herself. Clare’s also willing to doggedly pursue what she wants. Sometimes, as was the case with a recent boyfriend, her go-getterness blinds her to what’s going on around her. That’s led to more then a few misunderstandings.
Still, Clare is a reasonably self-aware girl (even if she’s not always aware of the feelings of others). Self-aware or not, however, she has absolutely no empathy for people who can’t afford whatever they want, whenever they want it. It’s just beyond her how anyone could live that way. Clare is sweet, engaging and friendly (when she wants to be) and she is prone to grand and spontaneous gestures of kindness. That side of her personality is troubling for people who’d like to toss her into the “irredeemable bitch” bin and be done with her forever.
Clare can certainly be a bitch. And an extremely manipulative one, at that. She’s not above using coercion or “blackmail” to get what she wants from someone, particularly family or borderline friend/acquaintances who’ve trusted her with their secrets and dirt. In practice, it’s unlikely Clare would ever betray her friends and family like that because she prizes loyalty but she’s not above alluding to it, to get her own way. That Machiavellian approach does mean her relationships are always on somewhat rocky terrain.
