 First Day Out (for niellwyn)Sylvie was flouncing around the outdoors, excited about finally getting to her new school. She knew that it might take some time for someone like her to fit in at a school like this, but she figured that, if they didn't like her the way she was, then they weren't worth bothering with.
She was busy getting familiar with the school, trying to make sure she knew where everything was so she wouldn't get lost. Instead of bringing a veteran student with her, however, she decided to go by herself; after all, independence was the best way to learn something quickly. |

Independence was also usually the introduction to the school of hard knocks. The woods are often taken for granted by those not used to them. City dwellers see trees and think them harmless, and give no thought to the rigors involved in actually traversing a wood. Let alone one as dense or tropical as the one Sylvia now found herself. It had been hours since she had first made her enthusiastic entrance. Now she was beginning to appreciate all those stories about men wandering for days in the same circular track, vainly seeking escape from tangles of underbrush and the monotony of green. The sun was sinking, and there was no doubt by the time she found any sort of path that it would long since have set. Already the beasts of the jungle could be heard making their savage, faraway calls. The bugs incessantly tormented her with their stings and bites.
However, hope was not lost. There was a low rustling, unlike the movement of the wind through leaves or an animal's stealthy disturbances. It was far too regular. When the sound became interspersed with indiscernible fragments of female speech the source could no longer be doubted. The twilight murk came close to obscuring the blurry silhouette that could be detected a good distance off.
