I'm slightly confused on where the RPs actually take place

Same palce as here, in effect. Some of the threads like the New student thread are dedicated to post by post RP. Classrooms, Antares Base, Student's Commons, NICE Labs, Basement, Outdoors, Slave Pens, Gymnasium, and the Dorms are some of them.

I made an introductory post in the Dorms thread. I'm new to the Forum-type RP

I noticed the post. Yeah, thread type RP can go a little slower, but it lets you get more complete thoughts out.

Open threads work, by the way, but often you get the best results by reading other people's RPs, and when you find somebody whose posing style you enjoy, PM that person and ask for an RP.
