Part 1

'Gregory Humstead…' a voice droned monotonously over the speakers that squeaked occasionally with static annoyingly. Maylea clapped with the rest of her graduating class as the young man rose from his seat and made his way to the podium, shook the principal’s hand, and received his graduation certificate. Principal Moosly slid his glasses up along his pudgy nose, peering down at the paper in his dark-skinned hands, 'Uh, Thomas Kiloah…'

Maylea sighed, clapping half-heartedly as she scanned the crowd of blue-robed graduates with her brown eyes. So many familiar faces, all with their own plans on what they were going to be doing after this day was done. How many of them would stay in Oahu' How many would leave the island to school in large Universities in the continental United States' She even knew a couple friends that were going to leave for Japan just next week to school at their campuses.

The girl smiled when her drifting gaze caught the friendly return stare of Ipo, her best friend, sitting a few rows in front of her. Maylea winked at her friend, who returned the favor by blowing a kiss. Both girls giggled, but the sound was drowned out by another round of clapping as another high school student took her diploma, and her freedom, into the palm of her hand. One by one the rest of the fifty-odd graduating seniors made their way to the podium to collect their diplomas.

However, it wasn’t until the very end of the list that Maylea finally found her own name called. 'And Maylea Young…' the principal’s voice droned in conclusion. The whole class gave a hearty applause as the last name was called on the list, and Maylea smiled as she pranced up to the podium, silky black hair waving behind her, and collected her high school diploma. 'Congratulations, folks,' Principal Moosly droned to the parents sitting in the bleachers behind the graduates, 'Your kids actually made it through high school. Now get out of here; I don’t want to see any of you ever again.' The parents laughed and the students cheered, throwing up their caps with victorious whoops and cheers before dispersing to meet with friends and family.

As the native-born teenager began shifting through the crowds, saying bye to friends who were leaving, making plans with others, and shooting down the last attempts of half a dozen boys who tried to hit on her, she couldn’t help but feel out of place. Suddenly she felt as thought everyone else was moving around her, and she was stuck in slow motion. Everyone else had a plan; everyone else had a purpose to their young lives. Yet, for Maylea, there was nothing laid out for her; no plans of further education or getting a job or even knowing what she would be doing the rest of her life. She had missed signing up for any college scholarships, had missed the SAT tests, had missed University enrollment deadlines left and right, she was lucky she had graduated high school with all the days she had ditched to go hang out with friends or go surfing.

Maylea suddenly found that she was alone, looking about herself as the crowds dissipated quickly to go their separate ways. She turned in time to see her parents walking proudly to her, Papa’s hand wrapped around Mom’s shoulder. 'Aloha, miss, do I know you'' Papa said teasingly, gesturing toward the diploma in Maylea’s hands, 'That certainly can’t be my daughter, because she’s holding a graduation certificate; my daughter’s much too lazy to earn one of those.'

'Rocco, stop teasing her,' Mom said, slapping her hand on Papa’s broad chest as he chuckled, 'we’re very proud of our baby girl. We have some good news for her too. Come on, Maylea, let’s walk home together.'

The raven-haired girl shifted uncomfortably, 'Thanks Mom, Dad, but I was actually gonna go hang out with-' Her mother interrupted her by shushing her sternly, 'No, Maylea, come on home with us now. You’ve been with your friends enough this year. Besides, we have some important things to talk about.' Mom held out her hand, beckoning the petite girl to join her parents. Maylea groaned, but allowed herself to be dragged over to her mother so that she could hold hands as the three of them walked home.

For most of the walk home, Mom and Papa walked with Maylea in uncomfortable silence. It seemed that this talk had not been prepared in advance, thought the girl as she sighed and watched the sun begin descending in the sky as evening fell across the island of Oahu. Finally, on the last stretch until they reached their house, Papa spoke up, 'You know, Maylea, that gown looks good on you. I’d sure like to see you in another one sometime.' That was Papa, always knowing how to ease into any subject with a good joke no matter how uncomfortable the ensuing talk was going to be.

'I told you, Papa,' Maylea said sweetly, 'I missed enrollment this year. Maybe I’ll apply next year, okay'' Now her mother spoke up, becoming braver now that conversation had finally started, 'No, Maylea. I don’t want to hear your promises any more. You never do what you say; you’re always more concerned with having a good time rather than becoming a better person. That’s partially to blame on your father and me, and we’re sorry.'

Maylea groaned; she hated this speech, especially after having heard it over a hundred times. 'Really, Maylea, listen to me,' Mom said, tightening her grip on Maylea’s hand to get her daughter’s attention, 'You weren’t disciplined enough as a girl, and if you don’t learn some soon then you’ll just grow up to be a lazy bum on the beach for the rest of your life. That might not sound so bad for you now, but things are changing, Maylea. You need to get your head out of the sky and start thinking about your future.'

They had reached home. However, there was someone waiting for them when they arrived. A man was standing on the front porch, watching the family approach. He appeared to be rather young, wearing a nice pin-striped suit and shiny shoes, and he smiled very pleasantly when the family walked up to meet him. 'Mrs. Young,' he said, descending the steps with arms wide, 'I can’t thank you enough for your kind hospitality; though I hope you don’t mind if I took the liberty of washing those dishes you used to serve us dinner.'

Mom giggled, shaking her head to show she didn’t mind at all, releasing Maylea from her hand as she embraced the young man. 'Mr. Young,' the man addressed Papa, shaking his hand firmly when he had finished hugging Mom, 'I take it the graduation was a memorable event''

'Oh yes, Mr. Niceman,' Papa said, smiling widely as he returned the handshake firmly, 'I hope you didn’t have to wait long for us. I really appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule to see our daughter and discuss our situation.

Maylea, come here. This is Mr. Niceman. He’s the dean at Shokushu Campus, which is a private all-girls school on the other side of the Pacific.'

Maylea suddenly blanched as she was approached by the pleasant young man. He certainly didn’t look like a dean from what she knew of them from teen movies about college. Niceman reached his hand out and smiled a brilliantly white grin, 'Hello, Maylea. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you from your delightful folks here.' The girl was paralyzed, not knowing what to do as her mind scrabbled to figure out what was going on. Her father finally coughed politely to snap Maylea from her thoughts, and she jumped slightly before taking Niceman’s hand weakly and shaking it a bit uncomfortably before pulling away and wrapping her arms around her chest.

'Um…Mom, Papa, what is this all about'' she asked, looking past the suited figure before her to look worriedly at her parents. 'We were able to enroll you in college this year after all!' Mom said, smiling and clapping her hands with joy, 'and it’s a private school too: very well renowned for its strict discipline and professional staff. Isn’t this just great' You’re going to college!'

Maylea began to panic, feeling as if she were being goaded into a cage. She was about to turn and flee for the beach when suddenly a warm hand of reassurance placed itself strongly on her slender shoulder. The girl looked up to see Mr. Niceman standing beside her, who lowered himself to look at her level in the eyes. 'Look, this is a big change for you, and it’s going to happen very suddenly. Let’s go inside and have a seat so we can explain everything to you first, okay'' he spoke with a warm smile constantly brightening his every word. How can a girl say no to such a perfectly simple and polite gesture'

'Um…okay,' Maylea whispered, her eyes struggling to hold back tears of confusion and powerlessness at what was going on. She was guided into the house by Mom, Papa and Mr. Niceman. When she was seated on the old relaxing chair by the living room window, her folks and the dean of this school deal sat on the family sofa opposite of her.

'Now, Maylea,' Niceman said, sitting straight and professional as he spoke in a clear, crisp voice, 'I was on my way back to the campus from a meeting in the U.S. when we stopped in Oahu for gas. I met your father while I was browsing the local shops, and our friendly conversation informed me that you were graduating high school but had made no plans of furthering your education. Your parents invited me to their house and we talked all day about our school program. Your mother wanted to enroll you right away, but I encouraged your parents to leave the ultimate decision up to you.

You’re now 18 years old, Maylea. You are old enough to make your own decisions and start making a life for yourself. Do you have any idea what you’re going to do with all the rest of your life' Surfing and being with close friends is fun, but that costs money, even here on Oahu. Where are you going to get that money now that your parents no longer have to take care of you' Who is going to hire you, and why' What skills do you have to offer employers'

At our campus, dear, you can find out what skills you possess. You can find your direction in life, and start making some real changes in yourself, for yourself. Just imagine how proud you would make your family, and your friends. Besides, wouldn’t it be fun to live somewhere other than Oahu' You’ve never been off the island; you can’t imagine what a very big place our world is until you step outside and look. Our campus could be your first step into a wonderful new beginning. What do you say' Would you like to give it a try''

Maylea sat in silence for a while. The more she thought about it, the more it actually made sense to go to this school. There was no point in staying here on Oahu; her friends were leaving, her parents were only going to pester her the rest of the year, she had no job to get by on and she wouldn’t have to get used to a totally different life at the school, since it was on a Pacific island like her home. 'Alright,' Maylea barely whispered, 'I guess I could give it a try.'

Suddenly the tension in the room lifted. Her parents both yelped and hollered and pranced about in great joy at the news. Maylea’s mom kept hugging her daughter over and over as Niceman laughed and clapped his hands once in polite, joyous approval to the young girl’s decision. 'I think you made the smart choice for your future, Maylea,' Niceman said as the room began to calm down a bit, 'Now we shouldn’t wait long; Charlie, our pilot, is already refueled and ready for take-off.'

Again, Maylea was suddenly confused. ‘We’ shouldn’t wait long' Was he talking politely, or was there something else going on here' Niceman stood, walking towards the door calmly, 'I’ll see you at the docks, Maylea. Mr. and Mrs. Young, it was a pleasure. Make sure your daughter takes everything she needs with her, and that she wears her uniform when she comes down.'

'Oh, we can’t thank you enough, Mr. Niceman, sir!' Mom said with tears in her eyes, clasping the man’s hand in thanks before letting him leave.

'Wait, Mom! Papa! What the hell is going on!'' Maylea cried out in panicked exasperation. Papa turned with an odd look on his face, as if he was surprised that his daughter didn’t realize what was going on, 'Well don’t you know' You agreed to enroll in the school, so you are enrolled! Now, come on. We already packed your things, and Niceman even had a school uniform in your size! It’s in your bedroom. You need to change into it before you head down to the seaplane at the docks.'

'Wh-what!'' Maylea nearly fainted, 'I’m leaving TODAY''

'I know it’s kind of sudden, Maylea,' Mom said soothingly, stroking her daughter’s silky length of raven hair, 'but this is for the best, and that way we don’t even have to pay the air fare to fly you over to the school! Not just that, but Niceman said that you qualify for a full scholarship which he will help you sign up for once you reach the island.'

'Right, c’mon Maylea, go change now,' Papa said, pushing her daughter into her room, 'and don’t take long; you don’t want to keep Mr. Niceman waiting!'

Maylea flinched when the door to her room closed. She just stood there for a few long moments. Her room was barren, save for a couple of suitcases and a cleanly-pressed navy blue school uniform laying on her stripped bed. The girl fell to her knees, putting her smooth face in her hands as she wept quietly.

She could understand her parents’ excitement about getting her off to school, but they didn’t have to act like she was just dead weight that they were so eager to throw out of the house. Nonetheless, she didn’t let her parents hear her crying; she didn’t want to ruin their happiness just because she was being a little oversensitive. It’s just that everything was happening so fast. Maybe that’s how things worked out in the real world. She had seen how busy things ran in the movies she watched. Everybody ran around like insects, scurrying as fast as they could to get a dozen different jobs done in half the normal time it should take for everything.

The girl rose after a couple of moments, clearing the tears from her eyes and cheeks before standing above the school outfit and stroking the navy vest with a single hand. Was this really for her' It seemed so foreign, so alien to everything she was used to. Maybe Mom was right, though, she couldn’t just surf and play the rest of her life. Everybody had to grow up sometime. With tear-stained eyes, she dawned her Shokushu uniform.

A few minutes later and Maylea stood in front of her bathroom mirror, the sole item that hadn’t been packed in her room. She admired how well the uniform fit her youthful figure, accenting the curves of her bust and hips excellently. Maybe if she had known she looked so good in these things she’d have worn them more often. Assured that she looked presentable, Maylea moved back into her bedroom and collected her two suitcases before swinging open the door to find her parents patiently waiting for her.

She supposed the look on both her parents’ faces were worth the suddenness of everything. They hugged her tightly, her mom beginning to cry softly with joy and pride as Papa kissed her on top of the head. 'Right us and let us know you got there okay,' Papa said; she nodded as she struggled to keep more tears back. Now it was her turn to push things forward, before she broke down and begged her parents to not make her go; she had to prove to herself and to her folks that she was strong enough to go through with what she said she would do…for a change.

'Alright, Mom, Papa; I’ll miss you, but I’ll write often, and I’ll see if I can come and visit too once in a while. I better get going now, though. Bye,' she spoke softly as she left, her parents struggling to let her go and Maylea struggling to push the door open and take her first steps truly on her own. After leaving the front porch, she turned, waving bye to Mom and Papa one last time as she soaked in the view of that cute little hut that she had called home all her life. Then she turned to face the water, just down the street a few blocks. With a sigh of determination, of releasing all the emotional chains that tried to keep her glued to the spot, Maylea took her first step toward Shokushu, and freedom.

At the docks, she easily found Niceman and his seaplane. It wasn’t hard to find even amongst the expensive craft that surrounded the docked bird. The plane was magnificent, and beyond anything she had ever seen around the island before. It appeared to be powered by really odd-looking but futuristic jet engines, and the cockpit looked really sleek with its tinted windows and flashing navy blue color scheme.

Niceman smiled and laughed pleasantly as Maylea approached. 'My girl,' he said as he helped the teen with her luggage, 'you look absolutely stunning in that uniform. It really suits you.' Maylea blushed lightly at the compliment, though her dark tan helped to hide it, 'Thank you, sir, and thank you for giving me the privilege to prove my worth to myself and my parents. It really is what I had been hoping for, now that I think about it.'

'Good, good,' Niceman said pleasantly as he handed the suitcases to the pilot, who took the luggage and stored it in the rear compartment of the plane, 'now let’s move along. We’re behind schedule as it is, and we shouldn’t waste any more time setting off.' Maylea nodded, and thanked the young man as he helped her into the plane, the pilot then directing her to a seat at the rear of the cockpit. Niceman followed, taking his place at the co-pilot’s chair as the pilot locked the door, took his own seat, and began final pre-flight checks.

Both Niceman and Maylea took the opportunity to buckle up and put on noise-deafening headsets as the pilot of the craft took them out to sea before starting up the impressive jet engines and taking to the air. Niceman and the pilot then put on air masks as the plane began to ascend, and Niceman helped Maylea to do the same. As the plane climbed higher and higher, Maylea’s ears popping as they rose above the clouds, she suddenly felt very tired. It was to be expected, she assumed, since the day had been so very busy. Besides, she could use the rest before reaching this new island school that would be her home for the next few years…
