It was about the time of the civil war and this port was being blockaded at the time, the North cutting off the Southern ability to ship supplies easy so the vessel was to run the blockade as it had when departing the only thing was that it was taking no evasive actions and was picked up by the Union easily though when they boarded there were no crewmen here so the boat was simply lashed up to one of the blockading ships and was going to be taken as a prize of war but that was not how events played out.

"There was a freak thunderstorm that night and the ropes fastened to the ship either weren't secured or snapped and the Maru drifted to the shore where it collided with a reef. But as luck would have it the hull was not punctured but the ship was stuck on the reef.

The South could not waste resources freeing it and thus it remained stuck on the reef. After the war the Maru was transformed into a maritime museum of sorts. Groups are taken from the shore via small boats that weren't as heavy in the water and thus the museum was formed where tours were given of the old days. Storms and such didn't dislodge the Maru and I'm uncertain what it was used for before becoming a museum, though I suppose that it was always made that way."
