Background: Ginger was born the third child, and second daughter, of middle-class parents in Chelmsford, England. From an early age, she showed a love for the outdoors in general and plants in particular, more than once wandering away from her parents only to be found later sitting in a tree or staring raptly at a cluster of some flowers she'd never seen before. Although this understandably caused her parents a great deal of worry, she never actually tried to get away from them, and they were able to manage to prevent more incidents by being more vigilant until she was old enough to know better. They also had the sense not to try to discourage her interests, only to try redirecting them to outlets, like books, which were less likely to leave them worrying where their younger daughter was. This soon led to an interest in fantasy and magic, especially elves, faeries, and the like, and frequent daydreams about such things being real. Unlike some people who get such a deep interest in such things, she was under no illusions that they were anything other than fantasy.
Puberty brought its own set of problems, as she developed both earlier and more impressively than most of the other girls in her class. The attention, often unkind and always unwanted, this brought from her classmates led to her becoming self-conscious about her figure and doing what she could to hide her development. While most of the teasing eventually faded away, the unwanted attention and self-consciousness never fully did.
As graduation neared, a recruiter from Shokushu approached her with an offer of a full scholarship in their botany program. Ginger was pretty much hooked as soon as she saw the pictures of the island's forests in the brochure, and was on the first plane to Shokushu for the next semester.
Personality/Psychological Profile: Ginger is usually cheerful and outgoing, sometimes to the point of seeming to be a bit of an airhead. Her outgoing personality masks a somewhat introverted nature that can show through when she's only with one or two others, rather than a group.
She's more of a follower than a leader, willing to let other members of a group decide what to do. This does not extend to the level of an extreme doormat, though, as she will resist someone trying to force her to do something she doesn't want to.
Some bad experiences shortly after she hit puberty have left her self-conscious about her body in general and her breasts in particular. Compliments on her appearance tend to leave her blushing and stammering in an attempt to deny them, and she keeps her breasts bound whenever she can in an effort to hide their size, to the point of occasionally surprising people the first time they see her in a swimsuit or less.
Despite the lack of evidence for it, she likes to think that magic and the fae are real. This manifests as "Wouldn't it be neat if…" rather than "This has to be magic" when it slips out.
