Post Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
Truth or Dare. How crude a game. Why was it, half the student body enjoyed the game so much? It didn’t seem fun. Just frustratingly embarrassing. As the girls in dorm room ninety-three shared giggles, and embarrassed blushes, Catherine couldn’t help but cringe. Sometimes it seemed other girls didn’t make sense, at least to her. From what she’d seen, this game was an excuse to get each other to do the most foolish things and listen in on each others deepest secrets. Bringing her arms to curl around her legs and draw them close to her chest, Catherine exhaled softly, putting on a smile and answering the question shot at her with an earnest tone.

It seemed there was no end to this game, and before she knew it, what had begun at one o’clock in the afternoon, was soon breeching seven o’clock in the evening. Smothering a yawn behind her hand, she considered telling them she was tired, but that simply wouldn’t be like her. She couldn’t bare the thought of anything thinking she backed out of something, and she knew, they would assume she had something more interesting to hide, that, or she was simply frightened of playing it any further. Neither of these seemed to please her, and so with a sigh, she pursed her lips and allowed the situation to play on.

Beside her, Alison, a girl in her science class shared a soft giggle with her companions before turning towards Catherine with a sly light in her eye, her fingers kneading into her knees with excitement. “Catherine; Truth or Dare?” She questioned, though it was clear from her expression what she expected. Swallowing down her suspicion, Catherine inclined her head in thought, brushing her thick locks from before her reading glasses, pressing them up her nose ever-so-carefully before smiling.

“Dare.”

So she’d fallen into their trap. So what? She couldn’t very well just back out when she felt a challenge coming her way, though perhaps, she ought have done. “I dare you, to spend a night down in the basement…” Alison paused for a dramatic effect before leaving forward with a curved smile on her plump lips, “Alone,” She said gleefully; a couple of the girls gasping a little. “O-Oh, you really think she should? What about the stories?” One of girls, a meek-looking first year girl piped up with a weak stammer. “Jen. You’re not scared of scary stories are you? It’s just like you said, they’re ‘stories’ and stories alone,” Alison said firmly, glancing toward Catherine with a smirk, “Unless you’re afraid?” She pouted in a taunting tone.

Perhaps she ought have been. But being knew, Catherine had hardly heard any stories of the place, let alone, any scary ones. And even had she, she didn’t believe in things like ghosts, or aliens, or things that go bump in the night. “Fine, I’ll do it,” She stated, Alison laughing happily and clasping her hands together, “See, Jen? Catherine isn’t scared of stories,” She giggled, though something in her eyes betrayed something. Something that caused Catherine, for a brief moment, fear.

[[Hope that's alright ^_^]]

“You mean…yes? You’re actually going down there?” Jen asked in an awe-struck tone of voice. The circle of girls leaned inward, showing on their thrilled faces how impressed they were at Catherine’s boldness. Already their eyes regarded her with the tentative respect unfailingly extended to those willing to venture where others avoid, a blending of admiration and private disbelief. Each of them eager to learn if their own reservations would be justified or if Catherine would prove that there was nothing to fear.

“Good!” Alison enthused, clapping her small hands crawling suddenly into the middle of the ring. “So, we’ve got to make sure you’re dressed up for the basement.” Alison decided thoughtfully, sitting back to rest her chin in a palm. One of the other girls shot Alison a questioning look, prompting a grin.

“Don’t you watch horror movies? The girls in them are always as attractive as possible, and dressed as close to naked as appropriate. Now, I don’t think we need to send Catherine into the basement naked….” Alison paused to let the other girls blush or giggle, savoring her mastery of her audience. “…but she should wear something showy right? Something appropriate, maybe something she might get in trouble for if a teacher caught her wandering around."

“Alison, are you trying to get her in trouble?” Jen whispered fiercely, looking about for allies. All she received were blank faces, nobody committing to involvement in the conflict. Some of the confidence went out of the girl, but she continued regardless, rushing her words. “She might not believe the stories, and maybe some of the rest of you don’t either but I’m telling you at the very least some freshmen were lost down there for a few days. And when they finally found their way out they refused to say anything about what happened.” A few of the girls fidgeted uneasily. Emboldened, Jen launched ahead. “Besides, the teachers really don’t like it when students go down there except for detention.” Alison rolled her eyes.

“C’mon, lighten up. We’ve all heard the stories.” Alison swept her blond hair away from her face and affected a high pitched, sarcastic voice. “I heard this one girl disappeared and never came back. Oh! And I heard that some students went down there and lost their memories!” The blond snorted, laughing. “Well I heard that a pair of twins went down there and came back up lesbians but nobody believes that.” Snickers followed Jen’s mortified silence, and a tall redhead smugly commented that the twins were lesbians in the first place, to roaring laughter. Wiping tears from her eyes, Alison touched Jen’s shoulder. “Hey, don’t worry, okay Jen? I’m sure Catherine can take care of herself, right Catherine?” Alison said with a sidelong wink in Catherine’s direction. “And besides. I just happen to have a map.” And with that the blond triumphantly reached into her jean pocket and withdrew a folded sheet of paper and tossed it in the circle’s center.

“Shut up!” somebody gasped, and all scrambled to unfold the map.

“It looks real.” Jen admitted, looking over the official looking blueprints. “But the date is old. See? 1989.”

“So how about it Catherine?" Alison asked. "You said you were gonna go. You going to do this right or are you just going to stay in jeans and a t-shirt?”

Barely restraining herself from commenting on the pure stupidity of the clothing suggestion, Catherine heaved a sigh, her eyes glancing around the group for any assistance. The least they could do was allow her, her dignity and let the clothing suggestion slide. However, aside from the uncomfortable fidgeting Jen was displaying, no one else seemed to have any protests to voice.

“I guess it won’t matter really,” Catherine began finally, “I mean, even if I were caught by a teacher-It’s not like there’s much punishment for wandering about. I can always claim I was lost, seeing as I’m new,” Catherine reasoned, Alison smiling brightly, “Perfect,” She mused, glancing at a couple of girls nearby, “Well-I don’t have to do it all on my own, find some clothing already,” She tisked out, the girls leaping to their feet immediately leaving Catherine to ponder Alison’s unspoken leadership.

“Y-You know you don’t have to go along with this…” Jen spoke quietly, Catherine casting a careless glance in her direction, “It’s not going to hurt anyone,” She answered, Jen wincing visibly before backing down, “If you say so,” She agreed, a meek, but painfully feign smile on her lips.

“Enough already, Jen. Just because you’re too frightened,” Alison shot with a roll of her eyes and a casual flip of her thick layered hair. “Come on, already,” She sighed impatiently. “Ooh, how about something very tight-Or maybe, we could make a few alterations to the school uniform-?” One of the girls insisted, Alison inclining her head, “Well, we don’t have time to make anything like that,” She sighed as if disappointed by that fact. While a discussion was held, they finally settled on an idea, searching the room for appropriate things, Alison tugging Catherine into the bathroom and thrusting an armful of clothing into her grasp.

After what seemed almost an unnecessary length of time, Catherine emerged nervously, unused to putting her body on such display. She bore a skirt on her waist, not tight, but cropped shortly enough to offer almost her entire backside to display, revealing the laced black thong beneath which only seemed to reveal even more of her. The soft skin of her breasts was pushed up into view by the tightly made blouse, which kept almost to the style of a corset, winding around her torso and lacing tightly at the back causing the female a slightly more petite impression then she usually held. Her attire black, save for the white ruffles along the rim of her skirt, and the silken white lace which held the corset upon her.

“Perfect,” Alison smiled, bringing herself forward without invite and twisting Catherine’s hair into two pony-tails either side her head, deliberating whether to remove her reading glasses, before nodding her head in acceptance and smiling, “That way, if nothing interesting happens down there-You can always attract some attention from the teachers and make it all worth while-It’s no fun if there’s no risk, right?” She smiled innocently, Catherine feigning a smile, “Exactly,” She agreed, though the slightest resentment creeping into her mind.

Alison leaned down to adjust Catherine’s new black socks until she was satisfied. “There you go. You know, the goth look works well for you.” She said thoughtfully, and looked her up and down. “You should see yourself. C’mon, here’s a mirror.” Alison took a makeup case from her purse and held a small mirror up in front of Catherine. The short black ponytails, bound by satiny scarlet ribbons, lent Catherine a punky, naïve look that made an enticing counterpoint to her dark and revealing outfit. “Some black lipstick would really set everything off…” Alison stowed the mirror and began to rummage about in it, but Catherine gave her a look of such contempt that she abandoned the idea. “Actually, no makeup is better. It looks more natural.” Sure it does Alison, Catherine thought. The girls clustered around to get a good look, and the consensus was that their cat’s-paw fit her part perfectly. The map was pressed into Catherine’s hands in a fit of excited chatter.

“Good luck Catherine! Try not to get seen!” one girl exclaimed.

“Just make sure you follow the map and you’ll be fine!” another suggested. More advice followed, an endless deluge of it, along with assorted small gifts which the givers assured her would serve her in good stead. Each girl wanted to give something to her, as though they would in some small way be a part of the venture as long as Catherine had something from them on her. Catherine suffered through it all as politely as she could, but by the time she was able to excuse herself and get started she was much more happy to be leaving. She rejected most of the gifts, keeping only a slim flashlight with fresh batteries, a skeleton key that Jen insisted she take, claiming that it would open most of the older locks, a large bottle of water, and a walkie talkie that Alison held the twin to.

“Don’t call us until you’re in the basement okay?” Alison instructed her, making sure the both of them set their walkie talkies to the same frequency. “We won’t be talking back or giving any advice, cause that would undermine the whole point of being alone. But keep it on and tell us what you see if it’s something special.” Catherine nodded hastily, plucking down at the ruffles on her skirt, feeling exposed. Alison handed her a last present, a small blue denim purse that was surely stitched together from scraps of bluejean, and covered with slogans and Hello Kitty patches. The bag felt a bit heavy when she took it, but she didn’t question the contents, but instead put the skeleton key inside and zipped it shut.

“When do I come back?” Catherine asked archly.

“No sooner than a couple of hours.” Everybody agreed. All as one the group rose and made their way down the hallways in search of one of the basement. The door they came upon was warped from age, white paint clinging to the grey wood in jagged flakes. It opened stubbornly, requiring the effort of two girls to budge it halfway, where it obstinately resisted all further force.

“Try not to lose any memories!” Alison joked, as Catherine peered down the gloomy staircase, fighting vertigo caused by the steep plunge. She set foot upon the first narrow stair, and the girls nervously laughed.

“And don’t come back with any nasty thoughts about us either!” somebody behind her screeched in glee. At that, the girls leaned against the door, and it slammed behind Catherine, leaving her blind and alone on the precarious stairwell.

Post Re: Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
It was hard to contain a short gasp as the door cut off behind Catherine, suffocating her in the vast shadows throughout. Biting into her lower lip as her stomach tightened in an uncomfortable manner, she struggled with the torch for a moment before the light pierced the shadows, giving her a vague idea of her surroundings, though not doing much for her clumsy behavior; her free hand grasping at an unstable railing as she took herself down the flight of stairs, gladly resting herself against the icy wall, her skin prickling and goosebumps rising on her exposed flesh.

Fumbling with the walkie talkie, she considered calling up toward the others before dismissing it with distaste, in her eyes at least, they’d forced her to go through this. They could at least suffer a few hours believing her dead or missing. Thrusting it into the small purse, she struggled with the map for a moment, shining the torchlight over the sheet of paper, turning her back toward the darkness and shuddering with an involuntary chill running up her spine.

Quickly turning back, she searched the room around her before sighing and turning back toward the map, “There’s nothing in here,” She informed herself firmly, biting into her lower lip again, almost piercing the lip with the force she’d applied, attempting to calm herself then tracing a path across the map. “A storage room…Well, surely that’s better than lingering around here,” She murmured, placing the map aside then slowly trudging forward, ignoring the uneasy feeling bubbling inside her as she moved on.

She’d never been fond of the dark, so it came as no surprise to her that she felt tense and off guard, hopelessly trying the light in each room without success. As she brought her fingers toward another light switch, a frightened gasp escaped her as something crawled over her hand, immediately leaping back and dropping her things to the ground, the torch flickering for a moment before switching off, plunging her into darkness and causing her heart to pound against her ribcage violently, as she slid to the floor, her knees tight against her chest as her breathing slowly evened out and she heard the protesting squeak of a mouse in the direction of the light switch.

“Idiot,” She scolded herself, “It was just a mouse,” She informed herself, and finally leant forwards, sweeping the floor with her hands and gathering the purse and torch into her grasp, wincing in pain as her fingers curled around shattered glass and a disbelieving groan parted her lips. “Oh no,” She sighed aloud, the torch refusing to relight, and eventually, she abandoned it to one side, fishing around in the purse and retrieving the walkie talkie.

Holding her finger down on the talk option, she paused for a moment before swallowing, “Guys-I think I broke the torch,” She began shakily, releasing the button and awaiting for a moment, frowning as nothing but the crackling of the radio answered her. “Alison-Answer already, this isn’t funny,” She insisted into the mouth piece. Again, only the crackling of the radio responded. “Please, answer me,” She spoke into the walkie talkie, her voice shaking slightly as she glanced about her into the darkness. As she removed her finger, the crackling of the radio responded before abruptly dying out, her hands shaking as she tried the buttons, nothing responding to any of her actions.

“Great,” She mumbled sarcastically, standing herself and running her fingers along the cracked surface of the stone walls, attempting to recall the directions she’d made on the map before moving forward, her footsteps quiet, and her ears straining for any noise, not that she could hear much above the pounding of her own heart, and while she reminded herself that she was simply imagining things, she couldn’t help the feeling of isolation, loneliness, and the helpless feeling that she couldn’t do anything to change her situation as she staggered on in the thick shadows.

-----

“Alison-Do you think something happened?” Jen asked weakly, the walkie talkie having not made a sound for some time, “She hasn’t said a thing since she got down there-Oh, do you think something got her?” One of the girls asked in an excited, and frightened tone, leaning forward to toy with the walkie talkie without success. “Don’t worry, I’m sure Catherine can take care of herself. She’s probably perfectly fine, so she hasn’t called us yet,” Alison smiled innocently, her hands in her lap, and her fingers curled around the cold batteries from the back of her own walkie talkie, keeping a smirk from her features as she listened to the others worries without care; eyes filled with a feign concern.

Post Re: Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
The walls felt rough to Catherine’s groping hands. The bricks were moist, and the pitted surfaces left powder on her fingers, prompting her over and over to rub them off on her flimsy skirt. The darkness was absolutely impenetrable, completely absent of even the semblance of illumination. Her eyes kept detecting an impression of movement, inventing objects as she strained to discern anything at all in the blackness, but there were only the loud sounding echoes of her feet on the uneven tiles. Her heart spasmed appallingly when her toes caught on the unseen edge of a missing tile, and she caught her breath as she fell against the wall. She clung desperately to her purchase, listening to her shallow breathes. When her blood finally stopped racing, she continued forward, now gingerly edging her way along to prevent such shocks in the future.

Never before had Catherine felt so utterly lost. Her memory of the map refused to come clearly to mind, and she could do nothing but guess as to where she was headed. Perhaps she should turn back the way she had come. No, that would do her no good, after the turns she had already made. Catherine’s hand reached the wooden frame of a door, and she fumbled about in the purse for a key. Inside, she felt odd things, like wires, and something rubbery. Then she located the metallic ridges of the old style key and clumsily passed her fingers over the doorknob. It took her ages to fit the key to the lock, scraping and feeling around for frustrating minutes before the key slid home and she hastily turned it, hearing a satisfying click. She pushed the door inward and withdrew her key, and immediately tried for a lightswitch. Flicking it up and down a half dozen times it became apparent that the lights in the room were either burnt out or disconnected, and Catherine didn’t much feel like venturing into the empty space she could sense in front of her. Reluctantly letting the door close, she continued down the hallway laboriously, cursing softly as she banged her hand against the cool metal of what she guessed was a water fountain. The rusty spout reminded her of her parched tongue, and she unscrewed her water bottle to take a deep swallow. The water tasted bland and lukewarm, unlike the chilly air had Catherine shivering in her impractical outfit.

Finally she came to emptiness once more as the wall came to an end. She leaned out and waved her hand through the thick gloom but there was nothing to encounter. She reasoned that she must have come to another hallway, crosswise from the one she was in. The intersection might have been T-shaped, which might help her gain her bearings, but it could easily be one of the more central X shaped crossways. There was no way to tell. Catherine paused to rub at her bare arms, biting miserably at her lip. She was scared of the blankness in front of her, and scared of the darkness as well, and it was only a lifetime of upbringing that kept her calm in the face of so much uncertainty. She lifted her walkie talkie and switched it on, happy even to see the small red dot that appeared on its face.

“Hey guys. I’m lost. I broke the flashlight. Someone come down here and get me please! I haven’t gone too far, I think…” There was only static. “Alison? Jen?” She called plaintively into the speaker, mortified to hear how pitiful she sounded. “C’mon guys! This wasn’t what we talked about! Talk to me! Screw your dare I want out of here!” she yelled with more gumption. But there was no answer but the same crackling. Nearly in tears she thrust the useless device back into her purse and sunk to the ground, crossing her arms over her knees and burying her face in her trembling thighs. They didn’t have to be so mean to her. Truth and Dare was supposed to be a friendly game wasn’t it? Of course, Alison’s face hadn’t seemed all that friendly when she suggested the dare. Catherine swallowed, strongly suspecting that the sweet seeming girl had done all this to her on purpose. And for what? She hadn’t even been at school for much more than a week. Why should anybody want to hurt her? Wrestling with such thoughts, Catherine angrily wiped at her eyes and stood. Bolstered by the courage of indignation, she dashed out into the intersecting corridor with her arms outstretched, and ran hard into the opposite wall. She grunted at the impact, absorbing most of it with her arms.

Just then, the ceiling buzzed, and light flared into Catherine’s eyes. After such a spell of darkness, the unexpected light dazzled her eyes and caught her so off guard that she flung her hands up and stumbled back, shrieking in dismay as she slipped and fell heavily upon her bottom. Groaning from the bruise surely forming on her aching backside, she watched a long bank of fluorescent tubes grow brighter, followed by the flickering of others down the hall. Soon the hallway in either direction was bathed in a soft light, which was probably quite dim, but to Catherine seemed an almost unbearably harsh glow. The hallway was impossibly long, lined by doors on either side, and pierced by the still dark corridor Catherine had just arrived from. Taking advantage of her sudden luck, she didn’t question the illumination, but utilized it to unfold her map again and examine it.

It would seem that she was in the top level of the old basement. There was a newer set of markings near the north that indicated in the margin notes that it would connect to newer underground construction; the detention block and storage area the majority of the students were familiar with. So she was in an older area, most likely abandoned. She was on the first of three levels, it would seem, a storage level of sorts with numerous rooms. Underneath that was the maintenance areas, including the boiler rooms and archives, and connected to the sewer access. And nestled below that were the old detention blocks.

Post Re: Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
Breaking the calm with a restful exhale, Catherine lifted herself to her feet with effortlessness, dusting off her clothing then folding the map, stowing it aside for later use; her eyes running along the doors with a slight suspicion, as if expecting something to burst out into the open. Somewhat relieved when this didn’t happen, she glanced about the room, surveying it for a moment then finally regarding the lights, crossing the room to the light switch, her hand resting on it for a moment before flicking it off, startled when the light didn’t comply and remained blaringly bright.

Trying the light a few more times, she peered down the corridor. “Hello?” She called numbly, “Is someone there-Anyone?” She called, only to hear her voice bounce back with an echo. Unsure whether to feel relieved or not, the decided not to press the matter and retrieved the key. From what she’d seen in the map, the area was filled with old storage rooms, and knowing better than to sit around and allow her imagination get the best of her, she decided to try a few of the doors; maybe she’d find something helpful, though she doubted that very much.

Slipping the key into one of the locks, twisting it and hearing the lock strain around the key, as if it hadn’t been opened for some time, she tested the door knob. The more imaginative portion of her mind warned her not to go nosing about, but of course, she’d been taught not to listen to that part of herself, and without care, she drew back the door. Startled, she stumbled back as a mess of cleaning supplies came crashing down from where they’d been leaning on the door.

Grimacing at the mess of cleaning chemicals and brooms, Catherine tensed visibly as a few stray mice came scurrying out past her feet, obviously irritated she’d disturbed them. Sighing and attempting to push most of the objects back into the room so as to shut the door, she pinched her nose against the putrid smell of something rotting. “Oh-Gross,” She winced, spotting what seemed to be the remains of an animal, probably trapped in the room and left to die of starvation, and obviously, it prevented the rats from following suit.

“Well-So far, no lost students-But I think a dead animal is enough for me,” Catherine winced, speaking aloud seemed to calm her somewhat, giving her the feeling that she wasn’t standing down there all alone, though it could only do so much before her mind would give her a crude reminder. Finally pushing the door closed with relief, though the musty smell remained with her.

After the surprise she’d been given, she couldn’t help but grimace at the thought of exploring yet another room, but as the old lights above gave a brief flicker, Catherine pushed forward, surely in a place like that there would be some sort of torch, or back up power supply. Slotting the key into another door, she held her breath and twisted it, the door swinging open and her eyes strained through the shadows to make out the sight within.

Post Re: Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
The inside was still dark, though as she pushed the door open to its full extent the light from the hall fell into the room. Most of the interior remained in shadow, but she could make out the still outlines of what appeared to be human figures. A closer inspection revealed them to be mannequins. Cautiously entering, Catherine surveyed the area. The space was vast, the walls only dimly visible, and the air was choked with dust, making her raise her forearm to cover her nose and mouth. Much of the floor space was occupied by long shelves, upon which were sagging cardboard boxes, unlabeled, and the rest held mannequins of various styles, clothed in school uniforms. The uniforms were of a different style than the ones currently used at Shokushu. The skirts hung down nearly to the knees, and were of a darker blue than Catherine was familiar with. The button-up blouses were likewise of longer cut, and the buttons were mother of pearl. There were other deviations from the modern design: the kerchief Catherine had to wear in class was not present on these bygone uniforms, and neither were the navy blue vests. However, the blouses were made from a thinner, sheerer material that gleamed ethereally in the sparse light. She stopped at one of the more well-lit dummies. It was one of the limbless varieties, and so was not posed, but its wooden face was realistically sculpted and painted. The thing appeared to be fixed in an expression of surprise, the eyes painted on too wide and the pursed lips too narrow.

Catherine marveled at the history of the room, having never guessed that Shokushu had ever been otherwise than she knew it. She contemplated quietly, too, the more modest garb that had evidently adorned previous generations of students. Shokushu seemed at times very old fashioned, but now Catherine could see just how the school had changed over the years. What she couldn’t fathom was why these relics had been kept for so long under lock and key.

Catherine gazed at one of the uniforms and pulled at the front of her faux corset. She didn’t see any reason why she should have to wear such a provocative outfit; at least not now that she was out of the sight of her ‘friends’. Resolving to change into one of the more comfortable and concealing uniforms, she reached out to take a skirt off the dummy, avoiding looking directly at its unnerving face, but when she pulled the fabric fell apart at the seams to Catherine’s startled dismay. A smell of mold permeated the air suddenly, and Catherine backed out into the shadows, tossing the ragged scrap of rotten cloth to the floor. Her back came up against a hanging sheet, and she stumbled on the trailing edge. Clutching wildly, she succeeded only in tearing down the sheet as she fell for the second time. At least this time her spill was slower, and cushioned by the cotton. As she regained her feet in a foul temper, she came face to face with a whole new area of the room, which had been portioned off by the hanging curtain. Catherine gasped.

Before her were yet more mannequins, but these ones were positioned as by the whim of a depraved person, locked into all sorts of erotic postures. A featureless plaster doll was shackled into a wooden stockade, head and hands facing Catherine, the body limply kneeling. Nearby, a uniformed dummy stood with one hand resting dominantly upon the first’s head. Half a dozen were chained by their wrists, unclothed, to the far wall. Their proportions were pornographically explicit, bearing anatomically correct breasts and nipples, accurate genitalia complete with sparse patches of hair, even finger and toe nails. The painted skin was of a pale, lifelike tone, faded and cracked over many years. The artist had gone to the trouble to paint dull bruises on the inner thighs, but had left the faces completely blank. Catherine recoiled, seeing here a rubber dummy roped up in complicated knots, and there an armless mannequin leashed by the neck to a peg in the floor. Closest was a porcelain piece standing above where Catherine had fell. For clothes it had only a pair of white panties, but buckled over that with narrow leather straps was a black rubber phallus, of frightening size. A reddish brown blotch stained the crotch of the cotton underwear, and continued up onto the underside of the member.

Fear would have been an understatement. How was it possible for someone to feel less than that? Her breath hitched in her throat at the sights and she couldn’t help but curse her ‘friends’ for even suggestion such a stupid game. The room felt eerie, dense with the scent of neglect, rotting wood from the floors, and her gaze caught the sight of the straining ceiling, as if tonnes of weight was pressing down against the support beams, threatening to give way and leave her buried beneath the rubble. Just the thought of being pinned there amongst those dolls caused an involuntary shudder to run up her spine, her skin prickling slightly.

Breaking gaze with the dolls, Catherine directed her gaze at the floor, attempting to make her way through without touching one of them. Though, without her gaze on the dolls, it almost felt as if their eyes were intent upon her, causing her to stumble more than once, her eyes welling up with frightened tears which she furiously wiped away, turning and abruptly bumping into one of the dolls, screaming as she recoiled from it, the rubber felt almost human beneath her skin and she couldn’t bare the thought that somehow; it felt warm.

Gazing at the doll, Catherine stifled a groan of fear, it’s body was a jumbled pile of limbs from their encounter, but it’s head was inclined revealing the only portion of the dolls features the artist had managed to complete. It’s eyes. And they followed her, at least in her mind, so life like and chilling, that had she had the courage to touch them, she could almost swear they would blink and she would feel dampness beneath her fingertips.

She stumbled from the room clumsily, her hand thrusting into the purse and bringing out the walkie talkie once more; eyes stinging from the terrified tears which she refused to bare, as if those dolls would somehow sense her helplessness. “This isn’t funny!” She shrieked into the receiver, her hand barely steady enough to keep it near. “Guys-Please. I don’t care if I lose this stupid dare!” She whimpered, her body sliding down the wall and resting upon the floor, “P-Please…” She whispered helplessly, her fingers tightening around the walkie talkie before groaning in frustration, and summoning all her anger and hurling it across the room, the sound of static dying out as it shattered, falling in pieces near the door she’d neglected to shut, and her eyes rose toward it wearily.

As much as she couldn’t bare the sight of those dolls, her fear kept her still, kept her from moving to close to door. And the foolish part of her imagination insisted if she were to try, one of them would surely stir. The mere thought of it scared her, and kept her from moving an inch for some time, her chest even pausing in it’s heaving as she strove to make as little noise as possible before swallowing and lifting herself to her feet taking short steps forward, alarms ringing loudly inside her head as she approached the door, cringing visibly as she used the tip of her shoe to shuffle the dolls remains back inside the room, and without hesitation, brought the door slamming back, jerking the key from the hole after locking it.

An unnecessary relief washed over Catherine, but without luck, as she moved her hand, it brushed along the soft rubber of something she’d not noticed before, and recoiled as her eyes rested on the head of one of those dolls, those unforgiving eyes held on her in accusation, and unable to restrain herself, the tears finally came. Angry toward her so-called friends who’d made her do this, frightened of those eyes which didn’t break gaze from her once, and scared that maybe she might not get out of that place. At least, alive.

Now without her walkie talkie, she was fully isolated. For the moment she stubbornly refused to admit to the consequences of her action, but the lack of any connection to the world outside the labyrinthine basement ground away at her already shaken confidence. Worse, the persistent cold was gradually piercing into her bones, making her tremble violently. Her breath emerged as a ghostly vapour in the incandescence of the passageway. She could enter the room again to retrieve the fallen curtain, but the very idea made her pulse race so hard that it ceased to be a possibility. Catherine felt out of options. If she could memorize the course of the map she might be able to feel her way back to the staircase, but she doubted she could pinpoint her current location on the blueprints. The lights flicked and hummed. She couldn’t even count on being able to see for too much longer.

Catherine kicked the severed doll’s head miserably, and it skittered down the tiled floor. Inevitably, as it wobbled and spun, it came to a halt with blank eyes glaring harshly up at the distraught young girl. The feminine face sneered unfeelingly. She turned her back on it, and her spine tensed. Guiltily she glanced back, but couldn’t hold the gaze for more than a moment. Then she caught sight of something in the glass of the door she had just closed. Past her crazily wavering reflection, her pale expression drawn and ready to crack, she detected a single clear blue eye boring into from inside the room. Catherine’s hands flew to her mouth to stifle a scream. It was only a mannequin, she told herself. It was merely one of those horrifying dolls, fallen against the door. The eye blinked. Catherine froze as the blood in her veins turned to icewater. Her stomach fluttered. She heard the harsh sound of breath, and a sudden fog blasted over the door window, obscuring everything.

Catherine fled. Hysterical tears streamed unbidden down her cheeks, and her little black ponytails bounced as she scrambled her way down the lighted corridor. In her paranoid mind, the eye signaled something blasphemous and vile, coming from that room that housed nothing but warped parodies of life. That the eye could belong to a teacher wasn’t possible. What sort of teacher would have been skulking about in the dark as Catherine fumbled about and terrified herself silly? Her feet pounded on the tiles, and she heard the door rattle behind her, then slam open. She didn’t dare to look back. She didn’t want to see whatever horror was pursuing her. And pursuing her it surely was, for its heavy footfalls sounded powerfully in her wake, punctured by labored gasps. She heard a garbled curse and the sound of a zipper being done or undone. Shrieking unashamedly, she rounded a corner, veering out of the corridor of light and back into nameless black. The pursuer was slow, but persistent. Her lungs ached. She was afraid that at any moment her feet would catch on a loose tile and she would stumble. She halted, flinging out her hands. There was a door. Looking back, she saw a massive shadow stretch across the bright hall. Before she could determine to what the shade belonged, she slammed her key home in the door’s lock and threw herself into the room.

The dreaded footfalls slowed their pace, though the hoarse breath grew, if anything, more loud. She edged backward carefully, not wishing to give away her presence, fighting her lungs to work quietly. She bumped countless tables, digging her nails into wood to keep her balance, creating splinters that wounded her fingertips. The doorknob creaked, and Catherine realized, too late, that she had neglected to lock the door. She could hear the door swing inward. The nameless entity made its way noisily. Catherine closed her hand weakly around her flashlight, raising it to defend herself. Then she encountered empty space behind her. There was nothing to back into anymore, and she found herself falling into the void.

She tumbled, screaming in pain and shock when her hips met the hard wood of stairs. She tried in vain to arrest her rolling, impacting again and again with sharp edges and unyielding surfaces. When she at long last collapsed upon the landing, she lay in a heap. There was no longer any hope of escape. Except, the sound of the mysterious entity had vanished. Anxiously she waited for an unseen hand to reach for her, but it never came. Tentatively she pushed herself up, finding that her injuries weren’t as bad as she had thought only aching bumps and scrapes. There was no question of ascending the staircase, not with the bearer of that eye possibly still lying in wait.

Terror was running thick through her veins, Catherine staggered backwards, her body colliding against the wall, sliding along it as she refused to tare her eyes from the top of the stairway. Her sight was impaired somewhat from the tears which ran thick down her cheeks and each inch of her body was quivering in fear. As she neared the end of the hall, her fingers curled around the cold steel of a door handle, quickly slotting the key into place, her eyes darting constantly over her shoulder before sliding into the room, slamming the door closed and locking it, resting at the foot of the door with her face in her hands.

This wasn’t right. It wasn’t how a game was supposed to go. She was meant to be sitting in one of those rooms, waiting for the hours to pass, thinking of ghost stories to tell the girls when she returned. Not running from an unknown and defiantly not sobbing on the floor, desperate for anyone to show up, for someone to come and save her.

Forcing herself to stand, she moved on, her breath shallow and her eyes staring ahead unfaltering, refusing to take note of the shadows, though flinching visibly at every sound which met her ears. Tucking her hair behind her ears, she slowed herself finally, trying to take in the sights around her, the dimly lit hallways causing her eyes to strain. “Where now…?” She whispered, her voice unfamiliar to her.

Coming to a stop, she caught her breath, glancing around her wearily at the open space. Whatever had been chasing her was surely gone, there was no way they could have followed her. She’d made sure to lock each door she’d been through, and nothing but the sound of her own footsteps followed. Leaning up against the wall near her, she closed her eyes, breathing deeply for a moment. If she got out of there-Halting in her thoughts, she strained herself, the sound of scraping reaching her ears and causing a sharp intake of breath from her.

“H-Hello…?” She called out daringly, her voice echoing back for a moment then almost too suddenly the scraping stopped and an eerie feeling swept over her and she didn’t know whether to feel relieved at the silence or frightened. Now that she considered it, at least when the noise had been there, she’d known where to go, but without the sound she couldn’t tell in what direction her pursuer was in.

Swallowing, she took a few steps back, deciding she was better off continuing on the path she’d been on, and delving deeper into the shadowy basement, her body beginning to feel numb from the cold and her legs aching under her shaking body.

Catherine maneuvered between all manner of enigmatic objects on her way toward the next door, which she could see as a dark rectangle outlined in thin, glowing red. Metal and wood poked into her hips, and her fingers trailed through leather straps and set heavy chains jingling. She preferred not to contemplate what they belonged to. Easing her way past the bulky equipment, she slid her key into the door’s lock, mentally thanking Jen for the only gift that had proven useful during the entire ordeal, and stepped out.

She stood in another hallway, this one having a crimson luminosity due to red emergency bulbs recessed into the upper walls. Bare pipes emerged from the bricks, meandering, serpentine, along the walls and ceiling. The cement floor was cracked and pitted from the water dripping out from the metal tubes, which collected in inky, turbulent pools, and echoed in the enclosed space. A persistent humming permeated the suffocating atmosphere, and the floor thrummed with energy. Catherine’s muscles tensed at the vibration. The stranded schoolgirl moved on, past numerous rusted grates and side passages, until she encountered a dead end.

“Let’s see if I can figure out where I am.” Catherine murmured aloud, unfolding her blueprint. To her surprised relief, she quickly determined her general position in the floor. The way she had came was as good as useless, and the only other remaining staircase only led back to the storage area, a place she wanted to avoid if she could. She soon located a third option, and seeing it raised her hopes considerably.

“An elevator!” she exclaimed in joy, not even caring that her words loudly reverberated in the arched aisleway. If it were still operational she could bypass the level above altogether and finally escape. Since the emergency lighting was still getting power, and the water in the pipes was presumably still running, it seemed likely that a maintenance man still worked on the area, so there was a good chance the lift was still useable. Hugging the map to her chest, she indulged in a moment of inner jubilation before working out her path. She would have to wind through a few halls, and enter the boiler room to attain her goal. She committed the turns to memory as well as she could, and when she felt ready she fastidiously refolded her map and set almost at a run, eager to reach the surface and safety.

Post Re: Innocent Games [For niellwyn]]
It was an escape. Just the thought caused a soft smile to surface on her lips. As she ran through the hall, the sound of her shoes thudding against the stone floor, Catherine swung around the corner, panting softly, the illumination of light pooling from the elevator, conveniently held open as if it were waiting for her. Her steps suddenly slowed, and her body tensed visibly, soft breaths escaping her. “Waiting…” She winced visibly, her eyes glancing around the area suspiciously. Surely, it was a coincidence. There was no one else around, and she had passed no one on the way there.

Biting into her lower lip, she stepped forward, and instead of one footstep, she heard two. One shadowing her own and though it was just bare enough to be an echo, Catherine glanced quickly over her shoulder, her throat tightening as the shadows moved in an unnatural manner. Without hesitation, she quickly brought herself into the elevator, pressing the upwards button quickly, backing against the back of the elevator as the shadows grew denser and closer, body quivering in fear as it got closer and closer, the elevator doors shutting finally, nothing outside but darkness. Stepping forward hesitantly, Catherine stared through the darkness before a scream broke past her lips as a pale hand pressed against the window of the elevator before it jolted and began moving slowly.

Shaking in a frightened manner, Catherine moved toward the key pad, inhaling sharply. “Up! Not down-” She cried in frustration, jabbing at the button once again to no result. “Stop-St-” Cutting off, she caught sight of the emergency phone, quickly seizing it and waiting impatiently. “Maintenance desk,” A dull voice answered on one end of the phone, “Help-Please, I’m stuck down here and something is after me!” Catherine cried hysterically into the phone, “Is this some sort of prank?” The voice answered in a bored tone, Catherine groaning in frustration, “No! Please help me, I’m in the basement and…Hello?” She persisted, static filling the phone before it cut off, a sharp beep sounding in her ears.

“Unfortunately, the phone lines are temporarily down. This may be due to weather, service or an accident. Please wait momentarily, the estimated time for reconnection is; Two hours and forty-three minutes. Thank you for your patience,” An automated voice spoke into the phone, Catherine bringing her fist against the side of the elevator in anger, immediately regretting it as her hand began to throb, and barely noticing as the elevator came to a stop until the doors parted noisily, lights flickering over head in the poorly lit corridor.

The emergency telephone receiver, dangling from the end of its twisted cord, made a popping noise, and then began to play a static pierced rendition of Greensleeves. It was just the sort of melody one expected from an elevator, plodding and mellow, electricity replacing instrumentation with high pitched imitation. Catherine spent a few fruitless minutes jamming at the lift’s buttons, bruising a finger at last out of sheer frustration with the elevator’s lack of response. She slammed her palms on the walls and thrust the telephone into its socket to cut off the oppressive music. It was hard enough to think without that incessant droning.

There was no point in staying in the defunct elevator. The only way up now would be by way of stairs or a ladder, either of which should be easy enough to find. There was the risk of being caught by that same figure that had been dogging her steps since the mannequin room, but probably if she stayed still for too long he or it would descend to find her. It would be much better to be on her way. Catherine reached into her purse and pulled out the broken flashlight and tested its heft. The torch had a fair weight, and seemed relatively sturdy. Gritting her teeth, she swung the wide end of the flashlight against the elevator wall. It struck resoundingly, nearly jogging itself out of Catherine’s grip. The sound made her wince, but she heard nothing else to indicate a sudden approach. Her makeshift club sported a new dent, but was otherwise in good shape. Feeling as prepared as she was going to be, Catherine took a breath and stepped out into the unlit hall.

The corridor yawned ahead of her, hewn from colorless rock. Catherine took her steps slowly, watching the way her shadow stretched over the floor slabs and shuffled its elongated, tenebrous limbs. The light was swallowed up as she progressed down the subterranean throat, until she was moving blindly once again. Almost casually, by now, she focused upon her hearing, and was at once aware of a hundred myriad noises in the tunnel. Faraway echoes of water, her own shallow breathing, even the swish of her skirt on her thighs became clear and meaningful. She let the sounds guide her, feeling her way along the stone and gingerly pacing forward in the direction of the sounds.
