Background: Qin Shuzhen was born in Hong Kong, but moved to the United States with her parents when she was 4. Within a year, the family was living with her father's parents in the New York suburbs. Her problems started in kindergarten. As the only non-white student in her class, and one of the few in the entire school, she was the frequent target of teasing, while her limited command of English at the time made it hard for her to respond in kind. Eventually, her frustration and anger with her tormentors reached a breaking point and she lashed out, leaving one with a bloody nose and another with a black eye. She was unable to explain to the teacher what had happened, while her tormentors had no such difficulty in giving their version of events, and so she wound up in trouble for the first of many times. While the two who she'd tangled with tried to stay clear of her, it became a game among some of the others to try to goad her into attacking, frequently succeeding in ways that resulted in teacher only seeing the attack, not the lead-in. Because of this, she quickly gained a reputation as a troublemaker that would follow her through school. At home, the situation didn't improve much. Her grandparents despaired of any hope for their "overly Westernized", "unladylike" granddaughter. Her father, meanwhile, took every note home about his daughter getting into fights as an insult to the family name, frequently punishing Shuzhen without listening to her side of the story. Her mother, on the other hand, was generally supportive even as she tried to get her daughter to control her temper. Sometimes, this was simply by supplying a shoulder to cry on or a sympathetic ear. At other times, it took on a more active role, such as backing Shuzhen's desire to learn karate and judo over her grandparents' objections to her learning Japanese martial arts. (She felt, correctly, that the discipline would help her control her temper and give her a better chance if she got into a serious fight.) Shuzhen did get a few friends over time, mostly other outsiders. It was one of the members of this group who started calling her Susan, having difficulty with her actual name. She decided she preferred that name and started answering to it as readily as (and eventually more readily than) her actual name. As she was starting high school, her mother was killed in a traffic accident. In shock, and unwilling to let her enemies see her cry, Susan closed herself off to others even more than usual. Most of her remaining friends were driven away by her new attitude, and she missed an opportunity to improve her relationship with some of the other students. One friend, Linda Vandenberg, stuck with her throughout this time and most of the rest of high school. During their senior year, however, the relationship started getting awkward until, while they were studying for a test at Susan's house, Susan confessed that she thought she was falling in love with Linda. Linda was relieved by the news and admitted that she'd been hiding her feelings for Susan to avoid damaging their friendship. The situation would have been perfect if Susan's father hadn't walked in on them kissing. The results were immediate and devastating: Susan was forbidden from seeing Linda outside of school, her activities were severely restricted, and her college choices were limited to a small set chosen by her father and grandparents. Looking over the college choices, she eventually decided on Shokushu, the one that would take her furthest from her relatives. At the airport, after a tearful goodbye with Linda, who she promised to try to come back to after they finished college, she had her final parting with her family. During it, she said that she didn't regret that she would probably never see them again. If only she'd known what was waiting for her... While she managed to do reasonably well in her classes, her first year at Shokushu did not go very well for her. Shortly after her arrival, Keemari Sulivan, a tutor and researcher at the school, appeared to offer her friendship, but this ended up with his "fan club" attacking her and him betraying her trust to have his way with her. She was attacked by other monsters during the year, mostly far less subtle ones but ending in another seeming offer of friendship that ended in betrayal, this time at the hands of a swarm of pixies. Even worse, a budding friendship (and more) with fellow student Malina May Ellensburg ended abruptly when Malina disappeared. Her second year actually went better for her. The monster attacks still occurred, but were no more frequent than before (and one, at the prom, was completely erased from her memory). She also managed to form relationships with more of her fellow students, although a lunch event orchestrated by one of the monsters would make any future encounters with the students she first met there... awkward, to say the least. The biggest negative point for her was an encounter early in the year when the monster Aegir disguised himself as Linda to get close to her. For this, he moved to the head of the list of monsters she'd kill slowly and painfully if she ever got the chance. Her junior year was mainly marked by the strengthening of her relationship with fellow student Pia Marie Hov, a relationship started by Pia's sleepwalking the previous year. This climaxed the night after Susan rescued Pia from the forest after she'd been the victim of a monster attack, which ended with Susan overcoming fears resulting from her two abruptly interrupted relationships and admitting her love for the other student.
Personality: She is rather shy around people she doesn't know and has difficulty opening up to them. This difficulty was only increased by childhood taunting about her accent (which is not very noticeable any more) to the point where she rarely starts conversations with people she doesn't feel comfortable around and tends to give short, abrupt responses when they talk to her. Around friends, she is more easygoing and talkative. She is very loyal to, and protective of, those she considers friends. Due to her difficulty making friends, she sometimes tries to maintain friendships with people who have drifted away from her or weren't really friends to begin with. Her childhood experiences have left her with an intense dislike of bullies, and she's likely to step in to protect the victim of bullying. Her temper was almost legendarily bad in her youth. While time and her martial arts training have eased it, it's still there and can surface in bad circumstances. She can get embarrassed about some of her "geekier" hobbies. She has a tendency to go off on her own in areas like the forest, as if trying to prove that the monsters haven't beaten her. Whether she's trying to prove this to others or herself is uncertain. Her interrupted relationships with Linda and Malina led to an irrational fear of losing anyone she admits to loving. Her relationship with Pia seems to be helping her to overcome this.
Language: English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and some Japanese. Likes: Video games, martial arts, rock music, comics, animation Activities: Karate, judo, track, volleyball Magic? No. Other abilities: Aphrodisiacs tend not to have their full effect on her, overwhelming her control of her body but still allowing her to think relatively clearly. This usually isn't an advantage. Weaknesses: Her alcohol tolerance is somewhat below average. Miscellaneous:
